I've heard our new AD talk several times about a new arena being the top priority. I'm going to stir the pot here a bit. When going to the Dome Saturday look for the Avera signs, they were a major contributor. I've heard someone is taking their place and putting in a huge financial injection.

Interesting. Along with all of the signage, I know Avera is an official sponsor of Saturday's game; it's mentioned in all of the radio marketing.
I've heard a range of rumors concerning a basketball arena. Within the last 10 days, I was listening to the radio (don't recall the station) and one of the sports guys paraphrased Ed as saying prepare for a big facilities announcement in the coming weeks. That's consistent with what I read on a P&D blog.
I've also heard from an athletic department source that the athletic department is poised to make an announcement that amounts to a communication step concerning a basketball facility. Such an announcement, I assume, would lay out the proposed plan, fundraising objectives, etc.
With Sanford's recent announcement up in Fargo, rumors are also swirling that a similar gift could come our way. I don't think there's anyway around corporate money. We'll need it to build an arena, in whole or in part.
I'm reasonably confident we'll have a new arena mostly or completely done in 5 years.

David Sayler was brought to USD in part because of his ability to get major building projects done. That's on his resume. It's not secret a basketball arena has been talked about. There are several key steps that have to be taken before that can happen. Find the key donor, whether corporate or individual. The next step is to determine Dome renovations. At some point both sides will have permanant seating. And it's not secret he wants to upgrade the yellow and brown seats in the DOme. Those stragic plans are getting in place, but don't expect any announcments until details are closer to finalized. It will happen, just give it time.

I heard this news last night about the Avera signage, I don't know if it si true. I've gotta run up to the tix office today so I'll check it out. But think of it this way, who would want to replace Avera, or rather, who would not want to sponsor alongside Avera? Getting the picture. I also heard this arena project is a done deal they just need to work out the details.
I agree with you yotemeal, I think we'll be cheering for the Coyotes inside a brand new facility within 5 years.

Update. Avera signage up and present in the Dome. Must have gotten some bad intel on that one. I do believe that something is happening just that I don't think they are going to take down signs in two days time.

Yeah, I definitely think before the semester is out, we will hear about a basketball arena, and I think the time frame being laid out here could definitely happen. The win over Minnesota was big also in terms of fundraising so I think that might have helped expedite things hopefully.

There is a large buyout to Avera if they are replaced by someone in the same "field" as they are. I was told that by Joel last year, and although he did tell me when the Avera contract was up, I don't recall the date.
I sure hope that the arena is a possibilty. I am absolutely amazed at how much our campus has changed in just 2 years, and give them another 2-3, and we truly have a campus quality that I believe very few could have envisioned just a few years ago.
WOW. I am impressed

OK. So what I heard last night is that Sanford is buying out Avera's contract and is going to donate huge dollars towards a new arena. A large part of the money needed to build this thing is a done deal. There will still be fundraising for the project, but it is a manageable amount. Now comes the part where Pres Abbott, etc. lay the plans of what to build, etc.
Take it for what it's worth. This info didn't come from anyone on the inside, it's just the word around town.

When I was at the Minnesota game I had some very good conversations with some Gopher fans. All were respectful of the Yotes and the effort they gave. Most of them synical towards the Gophers. When USD was ahead by more than one score in the second half, in a joking manner I told a couple of old timer Gopher fans that if it came down to it and USD had a lead in the final seconds that maybe what we needed was a big doner. Someone that would agree to contribute a large gift towards a new USD basketball arena in exchange for the Yotes letting the Gophers win it at the end. It was a joke but I believe Denny Sanford was at the game. That is funny. The fans got a good laugh out of it especially since the program to do the letting up was the Coyotes and not the Gophers. Of course it was a complete joke but it is kind of funny how things work out.
Whatever it is if someone steps up whether an individual or business and contributes a large donation towards a new basketball arena I will do everything I can to support that business when the opportunity presents. Hopefully everyone is prepared to have a new arena named after a business or individual such as Sanford. I would have no problem at all.
This is obviously exciting. If we get a new arena I am going to have no choice but to buy season tickets.

Coyote Fan,
I believe it when you say Sanford was at the Minny game, because he has some sort of sponsorship with them. Can't remember what it was but I remember hearing about it 3-4 times before the game started. It was some type of fan area or something. If anything he does give money to the Gophers.

Sanford has a private box/suite at the Gophers game. Yes, he is a sponsor for the Gophers. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter where the money comes from, let's just get the basketball arena built.

Oh yeah, I agree. Granted I wouldn't want the money coming from Cuba, North Korea or Fox News.....

Sanford donated the lat 6 million to finish the TCF stadium campaign. They named the hall of fame room after him.

There is no doubt T. Denny was at the USD v. Minn., they honored him at half time and 50,000 people saw his smiling mug on the jumbo-tron.
