Compton Accepts Invitation to play in 87th East-West Shrine Game
TAMPA, Fla. – University of South Dakota senior offensive lineman, Tom Compton, has accepted an invitation to play in the 87th East-West Shrine Game Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game is scheduled to kick at 3 p.m. CT and will be televised live on the NFL Network.
“I am honored to represent the University of South Dakota at the East-West Shrine Game,” Compton said. “I have tremendous pride for ‘The U’ and this achievement is not only for myself, but for all of Coyote Nation. I could not have been in this position without my former players, coaches, and staff at USD.”
Compton, a native of Rosemount, Minn., completed a stellar career for the Coyotes as he earned first team All-America honors this season starting all 11 games for the Coyotes on the offensive line. Compton earned first team all-conference honors and was named Offensive Lineman of the Year by the Great West Conference Media. He was a PhilSteele.com fourth team All-America selection in 2010.
He also was named to the Great West Conference All-Time Team as 2011 was the last year for football in the Great West Conference. The Coyotes are moving to the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2012.
Compton anchored an offensive line that helped lead the Coyotes to 6-5 record in 2011, including a thrilling 30-17 win over then-No. 1 and defending national champion Eastern Washington in the DakotaDome Sept. 10. The offensive line paved the way for the Great West’s second-ranked rushing offense (158.2) and the league’s third passing offense (177.6).
He is the only player from the Great West Conference in the East-West Shrine Game and is one of just six players on the West team not from a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school. For more information on the East-West Shrine game, please log on to www.shrinegame.com.
In addition, Compton also has been invited to the NFL Combine, Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis, Ind., in preparation for April’s NFL Draft.
Congrats to Tom. Thanks for representing Coyote Nation. Go Yotes!
