Just returned from the game. This is hot off the presses as I'm sure the cars are just filing out of the parking lot. It was a great day and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and safe travels home.
Where do I start? There was a festive atmosphere outside the Dome. Talked to some former players (seniors just graduated) and I encourage them to come back in the fall for Gameday, hope you boys have a fun evening which looked like it wa off to a good start. It won't really hit these young men until this fall that their football careers are over but I will add that you are never Former Yotes, you are always Yotes and always a big part of the USD Family. You are always welcome at our tailgate spot and look forward to sharing some war stories with you guys. Us young and old Yotes can talk about the good old days.
As for the game, I liked what I saw, It's always hard to judge how the team is going to be at this time but I saw some good things. Vander Maten looked good on some deep passes, one in particular where he threw a deep sideline route that was broken up o a good play by one of the D-Backs but the throw was placed timed and placed perfectly.
Play of the game was Emanuel Cromuel's fumble return for a touchdown, great strip play by the DB coming up on support and the big man took it to the house with the entire defense forming a convoy, and a some aid in helping him across the goal line. That play went for 6 points for the defense but we feel points should have been added for the strip and fumble recovery and the 60 or so yards the big guy had to cover to take it to the house. At minimum a 12 point play.
Feel free to add your thoughts on the game. Beautiful day in Verm and a great turnout for the Red/White Game.

Today was great, I was very happy with the crowd size and many students showed up as well. All I could think about after the strip and 60 yard sprint was John Maddon saying "now I get to see a fat man dance". From thr Replacements I think. Very athletic play for a BIG guy.

Any detail on the running backs and the number 2 qb? Rare to go through a season without needing the backup qb when you least expect it. Were they bypassing punts and kicks, and if not, how did the kicking game look?

Good turnout - seems to be building a little every year.
Both QBs looked capable. I think Earl still looks a little green, but I see a lot of upside with him. Will be a good competition as he matures. Right now VanderMaten looks a little sharper and is much more of a dual threat. At least this year when the QB runs it will not be as ulcer inducing as last year knowing there are two capable QBs in the stable.
The O-line looks quicker and more athletic as a whole, but I do not know if they are quite as physical as last year's crew.
Jasper Sanders is going to be an impact player immediately. Shifty, strong, and seems to hit the hole a little quicker than the others.
Marcus Sims will continue to be a stud.
Noah Pearl is very elusive and fast - unfortunately fumbled the ball away today.
The two turnovers were disappointing to see - perhaps it was excellent defensive plays that created them - we all know though that turnovers are game killers.
Stupid horse collar penalty - last season some of those same types of penalties really hurt.
Will Powell looks to be in good form as usual. Michael Burris is filling in Jeremey Blounts former role - stretching the defense. Nick Meyer looked really good today (looked good at the scrimmage last Saturday as well). Tyler Willhelm seems to keep improving. Blocking was as good as I have seen and he made a solid catch on a poorly thrown ball in traffic.
The defense IMO has the potential to be several notches better next year. DL depth is better and it should lead to fresher bodies in there - I think our guys got worn down on the defensive front last year and contributed to some poor second half play.
The LB core looks the fastest I have seen top to bottom on a Coyote team. They should all benefit from the opposing offenses focusing on Tyler Star. Tyler looks like he has continued to progress as a player.
Goro made a very nice play on a pass to Powell early in the scrimmage - coming over the top and separating Will from a near perfectly thrown ball. Guy has some major closing speed.
Two 40 yard FGs with no defensive pressure was good to see. Punts avg near 50 yards each - that is such a huge advantage to have a guy that can bail you out and flip the field on your opponent.
Exciting to see some football and hear some pads crack.
Looking forward to seeing how the team gets out of the gate against the Grizzlies of Montana.
