Here is one for the record. Does anyone know how many conference titles in all sports did each of the 3 schools won in their first year in the Summit League?

That is impressive. The Dakota schools have competed at a high level in the Summit league, and I would expect that we should be in the hunt as well. In many ways, SDSU has done better in Divisin 1 athletics than it did overall when in D-2, and that is to meant to be a slam, it is a compliment.
I fear long term for the Summit league though. It just doesn't appear to be stable to me. On the other hand, the trade off is the Missouri Valley Conference appears to be the strongest FCS league by far from top to bottom in football.

The Summit has long term problems, I agree. I think they made a big mistake by not scooping up UND, nickname issue or not, when they had the chance. They left the door open for the BSC to make an offer (to USD as well) and now I think there is a some regret from both conferences on how things shook out.

I disagree UND logo problems are not what a fragile league like the Summit needs right now. Can you believe there is a repeal the repeal law on the table for the June Primary in ND? It's an unbelieveable mess. PLus there are law suits hanging. Be thankful the legislators in SD have stayed out of athletic matters, something that has not happened in ND. I do feel that USD made the right decision though in passing on the BSC in terms of travel costs. The BSC also did NDSU and SDSU a favor in voting down their applications. I think Douple saw the strength in the Dakotas and made the big push to the then presidents of the SL. The stability of the NCC stands for something.

What would USD do if SDSU and NDSU were both given out and accepted invitations to the Missouri Valley Conference as an all sports member. IUPUI and Oakland to the Horizon. USD would be almost forced to come begging back to the Big Sky for membership. It's always a good idea not to burn bridges when not needed. USD may one day need UND and the Big Sky once again. With todays changing landscape the biggest mistake is that land of assumption and getting too comfortable with the present situation without having an alternate plan.

USD did not burn a bridge with anyone. It is actually UND that has been burning the bridge with a few schools. USD still has a good relationship with the Big Sky, hence Eastern Washington coming and things being worked out with Montana. The Big Sky did not seem bitter at all that USD did not choose them and they know how things work with all of the shifting in the conference landscape going on.

I agree that both conferences don't like how that turned out. The BSC wanted USD, too. That way UND had a travel partner. How would you like to be a team in that conference that has to fly to Grand Forks for one game and then go back home? The time zones aren't ideal either. Some sporting events will start before people get off work or the games won't get over until after 11 PM if you look at it the other way. I don't think UND has a conference for their football team but if that is worked out, I can see them joining the Summit. They might not do it out of stubbornness (that's the way they roll) but to play in a conference with all the positives the Summit has to be seriously looked at. There was some talk about the BSC kicking them out if they don't get their nickname issues worked out. That has quieted down but it still might be there.
