Something I saw yesterday that many probably didn't. Late in the 4th Anthony Willams had a ball go through his hands and ended up being picked. That kid came to the sideline and sat in a heap on the bench by himself. Totally devastated. Coach Glenn came up to Williams, took a knee in front of him and spent a few minutes with. He got the kids head back up and back in the game. Williams went back into the game later and caught the TD pass that brought us within a field goal of overtime. I don't know what was said but the effect was obvious. It left an impression of me too!

Yoteforever is right. USD has the talent to stay with anyone in the Valley, but they got beat yesterday by Illinois State AND by themselves.
Terribly frustrating to watch mental mistakes being made again and again yet we still found a way to stay in the game. The play that ended our drive with the ref having a JVM pass skip off his body was even harder to take.
Again, lots of promising signs that this team is heading in the right direction, but the penalties are now our official achilles heal. Gotta clean it up if we are going to have any kind of shot this weekend against Western Illinois or against anyone else for that matter.
Have a great week of practice this week and come out with your A game this Saturday. Go Yotes!

Yeah. The umpire on that play had the best coverage of any player I saw all day. Why was he flowing 10 yards across the formation with the receiver? The middle was wide open, if he wasn't in the way maybe we make that catch for big yardage. Also, there was a very weak personal foul call that put ISU in position to score 7 points as well as a poor PI call on 3rd down & goal on the same drive. USD made some boneheaded mistakes, for sure, but the refs also had a hand in giving ISU 7pts that game.

The one thing I really noticed yesterday was how the defense really stepped up against the rush. Up until yesterday, the rush defense was not good at all. Tim Marlette really stepped up and had a monster game in the middle. Not sure about the pass defense though. Seems that the secondary is getting beat way too much. Goro didn't get to play all that much yesterday. I think whenever he is in the games, he seems to really make things happen.

I agree with Iceman, on the rush defense showing great improvement. Marlette was amazing, and the young Nose tackles were plugging the middle, which is vital for the 3-4 defense. The promising thing with the team being this young, is that improvements are being made week to week. There are still some areas of sloppy play that is making the difference in Wins and Losses, but if the progress continues, I think the Yotes can make some noise in the MVFC this year.

Could we have won the game? Definitely.
Should we have won? That is the question.
In my estimation we could have won if we hadn't beaten ourselves. We should have won if the team went into the game with the necessary confidence. Did we have confidence? From a fan perspective I'd say probably not. How do we get confidence? Winning is the best way (nothing new here). Preparation also counts (nothing new here either). Sheer determination/willpower is to me another factor. This is where crowd support comes in. If the Yotes routinely had 2,000-3,000 more fans who "refused to lose" I think we'd be in that category no matter what team we were facing.
I'm not criticizing those who game to the game - we just need more people. As I watched the game I wondered what was going on in the greater Vermillion area that was so effective in preventing higher attendance. Shopping at the mall? (yawn) Bringing in the crops? (maybe in the old days) Cramming for that test on Monday? (hardly unless you're a med student and as I recall all their tests were on Fridays) Video games and such? (hum, maybe). I was never a "Ronny Runhome" in the day so I can't quite get it. Maybe - this is a stretch - mom and dad are the culprits! Our students have too nice a home life.
That's it! We should have won only if our students didn't have parents that are so nice .........
