Well, the obvious answer is winning. To some extent, winning becomes part of the culture of an organization or institution doesn't it? Students see themselves as part of a "football institution". What do you think of when you hear Ohio State? How about Princeton? The former conjures up thoughts of vast numbers of students packed in a stadium vocally supporting their team. The latter brings up thoughts of students packing a seminar on physics/economics or some such.
Hope I didn't offend anyone from these two fine universities. I'm not even sure if Princeton has a football team. Also, if you're particular - my mistake, it's THE Ohio State University. Never did know what the big deal was with the prefix THE but I guess it matters if you come from there.
