Another Spring Ball Article, this one from Mick Garry: www.argusleader.com/article/20130418/COLUMNISTS0108/304180012Every time I read one of these articles, it confirms my belief that it takes time to build a program. Bodies need to be developed, chemistry takes time, and a mentality needs to be be built back up. Also, the more I read about the young guys pushing the old guys, it leads me to believe that the Glenn is identifying the "right guys" to come into the program and improve.

Observations from the Spring Game.
There were more recruits and their families at this game than I remember in the past. The USD staff keeps doing a better job of making the Spring Game a better experience. Now they need to market it better. Kids all look physically better - the articles about progress in the weight room visually checked out. Offense OL looks better and deeper but they still may be a weakness in the MVFC - still a long way to go. Jasper Sanders looks even quicker than last year. Trevor Bouma seems like a kid that could surprise people. Better than I thought he would be. Hits the hole very well and has nice burst. Tyson Graham Jr is smooth and could be a threat for the offense. Austin Koch had a few longer catches. My prediction is he will lead in receptions for USD next year. JVM still looks fast and his accuracy still seems off. Kevin Earl looked really off - several throws way off the mark. Earv Archambeau is in the mix and looked good. Definitely a step slower than Sanders though. Marc Murtha's knee is still not healed completely. Need him close to 100% next season. Some solid looking RS Frosh OL. There is hope down the road.
Defense Devin Taverna had a really nice pick. Solid player. Was surprised that Lage is listed as second string. Ryan Hillier is ahead of him and he looked really good too. Will Armstead and Zeke Lewis are both impact players at DB. They are very technically sound tacklers and seemed to have good speed. Kept very good position on receivers most of the game, cutting off routes I think the secondary may be a strength. Tyler Star was having his way against the offense. If the QB was full on live today JVM would have gotten crushed a few times by him. DL was stout and looked good.
USD will be more physical than last year but I am concerned not enough. Unless JVM can be protected better he will have a hard time completing passes.
The defense will improve this year. They may still struggle with teams that decide to just hammer the ball up the middle. Our top two interior DL are good but their is not much depth backing them up.
A 6-6 season would be a huge stretch next year. Hope I am wrong and they are in the playoff hunt. My best guess is 4-5 wins next year.
They all need to have a huge summer training and keep that momentum going.

Thank you, thank you for a great report. Can't have too many perspectives! Hope others will chime in with their observations.
I am most concerned by your comments regarding the QB position and still think the triple option style is the only way out. Next on the list would be depth.
4-5 wins? Depends on the first 3 games. If we win 1 of those, maybe. Otherwise, well, I don't know at this juncture.

I think the old ball coaches analysis of the spring game is spot on. I'm somewhat surprised and happy at the same time, that our defense was more physical. That might be in part due to an overall lackluster offense.
I see 3-4 wins next season....tops. I hope I'm proven wrong, and would gladly eat my words. We are probably 7 points better than last year.
The good news is the trend is going the right way. OBC, thanks for a thorough breakdown.

(From yesterday's sport chat on the P&D website)
After the game Coach Glenn noted the defense only had 19 players available for the spring game but will have 2-3 new players that are "veteran players", ie, transfers. LB Austin Johnson is one (he already signed), and Glenn said a couple other guys have to graduate from a 4-year institution. Couldn't share the names.
Anyone have further details?
Also, Chris Wiseman and Drew Iddings, defensive players who would have played but are out with injuries. Chris will out this fall after suffering an ACL injury, and not sure what happened to Drew, but will he be back this fall? Both were highly regarded recruits.

Hoping both Wiseman and Iddings will work their way back in the line-up from their respective injuries. Both have shown a lot of promise.
