Not sure where to post this but it deserves attention:
Former USD runner Matt Dewald, a Yankton High School product, finished 20th at today's Boston Marathon. Matt was the 9th American to cross the finish line. He ran 2:19.39....outstanding performance. Matt was a good runner in high school and at USD but he wasn't necessarily a great runner. Well, he's continued to get better with age and has improved his best marathon time by multiple minutes...probably should say he's a great runner now.
Tragic day at Boston takes the luster off great performances but Matt had a great one.

Bump.
Seems to me a thread with good news about a USD alum's oustanding performance at the Boston Marathon should have top billing for a while.
If any readers of this thread knows Matt and has his email, twitter, whatever, send him congratulations. What should be one of his best days as a runner got cloudy with the terrorist attack. He'll appreciate knowing people recognize what he did. I'm not acquainted with Matt...just watched him run in high school and college because I have a son the same age and they competed against each other.

Thanks JackJD for bringing that up. I'm in Florida on a little R and R and my wife just called her mom and heard about the tragedy. Has anyone taken credit for this cowardly act?

Link to the official USD Athletic site for a short story and picture on Dewald: www.goyotes.com/genrel/041513aab.htmlDewald finished the race about two hours before the explosions. yoteforever: I stopped watching the news for a while and switched to the Twins game...less depressing. I'll go back to the news in a while but so far, no one has taken credit for the bombing. The event has all the markings of an organized terror group: well-timed, planned to inflict maximum damage for relatively small explosives, much of the personal injuries due to ball-bearings as shrapnel...just tore some people up. Sad day.

Just listened to Mike Lupica talk on the radio this morning. Patriots Day in Boston is a great celebration, the biggest day of the year in that city. If you've ever had the joy of experiencing it you know what I'm talking about. He said something that rang true to me this morning in that if you've ever been a part of that celebration, ever been to the marathon and ran in it, or had a friend or family member run in it, then yesterday's events hit home and are very personal.
The people or persons that did this are sick, cowardly people. They didn't attack a sporting event, as maybe some believe, they attacked a celebration of people. The times of these attacks were at the 4 hr mark of the race. The "competitors" had finished the race 1 1/2 hrs ago. The people left on the course and crossing the finish line at that time are people running for charities, running for a personal accomplishment, with friends and family at the finish line cheering them on. It makes me sick to think about it.
I hope I didn't go off too much, just this really hits close to home for me. Congratulations to Matt on his accomplishment, the Boston Marathon and tackling Heartbreak Hill is no small task.
