Glad to see the conversation turn back to football instead the great Pizza Ranch debate! I agree that 2-6 are very interchangeable, but we still can all take our own shot at the Pre-Season rankings along with which Yotes are deserving of pre-season honors. So here are my picks for what they are worth.
1. North Dakota State
2. Northern Iowa 3. South Dakota
4. South Dakota State 5. Illinois State
6. Youngstown State 7. Southern Illinois 8. Missouri State
9. Western Illinois 10. Indiana State
Offensive Pre-Season USD Candidates: Shamar Jackson - WR Tanner Anderson - OL
Defensive Pre-Season USD Candidates: Darin Greenfield - DL Nathan Schultz - DL Andrew Gray - DB Phillip Powell - DB

Had to watch the game on tape the next day, but definitely a very good debut for Streveler. After watching a CFL game from beginning to end, I now have some questions. The game moves quickly and there are some interesting rules that help keep the game exciting. Do the high schools and colleges in Canada play by similar CFL rules or do they play by rules similar to ours? Since most of Canada is uses the metric system, why do they still use yards and not meters? Is there any chance we can get the objectionable conduct penalty south of the border, I really liked how that was used. Looking forward to watching more Bomber games and seeing how our former Yote continues to shine!

Before I give my review of the Spring Game, you first have to understand that there were many players with injuries who would normally start and were not in the lineup. Second, there were a significant number of players who had little to prove in this game and thus saw very limited time. Finally, both offensively and defensively what we saw was very vanilla, during the season expect to see many more offensive sets and even more variety of plays. On defense, it would be fair to say we will stunt up front (saw very little of this on Friday) and we also saw very little of the 3-4 defense. When a majority of your spring game is time used to evaluate 2nd and 3rd string players, you are in good shape as a team. I was excited to see many new faces get opportunities and experience. 3 years ago, during Coach Neilson’s first pring game the overall talent level was lacking, we were much smaller, slower and overall not as athletic as we are now. Speaking briefly with one of the coaches, they are also very excited about the athleticism of the incoming Freshman and more than likely, we will see a few of them make an immediate impact as well.
As far as the game goes, On offence, what we saw looked good. Consider that we are down 2 starters from the O-line, yet the pass pro was very good and we created some very good running lanes. I love the depth at O-line and I am very excited to see the battles there next fall. Once again, I feel this is the strength of our offense. We saw a good bit of Simmons, and he looks the part. Yes he was helped out by some great catches, but that's the way it should be. The bunnies QB has been bailed out by some great receivers and most consider him a very good QB. I had a chance to rewatch the game and I felt Tsaglis and Kaiser looked much better on a second review than I first thought. I feel confident going into the fall that we are solid at the QB position. Fredrick and Henry saw very limited action at RB, which gave opportunity again to see our depth. Klett ran strong and showed some elusiveness and speed. Thull also showed well as a possible option in the fall. Here again I have a lot of confidence that our running game is in good shape. The receivers looked great. Besides the amazing catch by Allen, Crawford, Baker, and Falk all looked solid. Crawford could end up being a really good WR. Consider that Case, Ducker, and Jackson saw very little action and you can see why this is such a good unit. Other than Herrmann’s TD catch, the TEs were non existent and this could be an issue. I am confident in Samson, but we need one of the R-Fr to step up this fall. Overall, I give the Offense a solid B+ for Friday night.
On defense, we saw very little of the new 3-4 look and no real stunts. It looked like we were in a base defense most of the night as we rotated in a lot of names to get a good look at our depth. Up front, we were credited with 2 sacks and 6 tackles for loss. 4 of those TFLs came from the front guys. Yes, the running game had some good success, but the D won some battles as well. I have a lot of confidence in this position group and our depth looks excellent. At linebacker, it looked liked we were holding tryouts as there were many new faces getting opportunities. Considering we did not see Alex Gray or Alex Coker, this group had a solid night. I was very excited to see Matthew out there. He has a ton of promise and if he can stay injury free, he could solidify the middle. Joanis, Amunsan, and Makwinja all played well and might find there way to the starting lineup or at the very least solidify our special teams. While or DBs struggled at times, Consider the fact that in limited playing time, Armstead led the team in tackles and Collins, also had his time limited. Sommerville, Bolden, and McDaniels all got valuable reps at the edges but all still need more experience. With Powell out and Andrew Gray with limited time this gave opportunity for Johnson, Reed, Fischer, and Heinrichs to gain experience. While the the Defense got beat a few times, overall I still give them a solid C+
Special team are always very limited in the spring game. I thought the kickers looked good and showed great range. Punters need to be more consistent, but we will wait for the season and see how they do.
Overall, we got to see our depth and athleticism on display and that makes for a lot of positive anticipation for next year. Overall grade I would give is a Solid B. Here's hoping the boys finish their semesters strong and then put the time in this summer getting stronger and faster and Fall camp will be here sooner than you think. Should be another fun Fall and another trip to the Playoffs! Go Yotes!

After watching the spring game my prediction 3 to 4 wins. DB play was horrible. D is in trouble!!!!! AT KANSAS STATE. L VS NORTHERN COLORADO W AT WEBER STATE. L AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. L VS MISSOURI STATE. W VS NORTHERN IOWA. L AT YOUNGSTOWN STATE L VS NORTH DAKOTA STATE L AT INDIANA STATE. W VS WESTERN ILLINOIS. TU AT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE. L Wow, that glass is half empty isn't it! May I suggest season tickets next to CF! The two of you can look at everything thru your own glasses and criticize every move. No reason to think there is a lot of talent on this team and the coaching staff just might know what they are doing? Might as well forget next year, fire the staff, shutter the program and spend my fall doing something other than watching Coyote Football!

USD - 8-5, 4-4 in Conference in 2017, 2 round playoffs Graduate: 18 Seniors: 5 Offensive Starters, 2 Defensive Starters, 2 Special Team Starters & 3 others on the depth chart last fal All-Conference Losses- 1st team - 1 QB (O player of the year), 1 OL 2nd Team - 1 LS Honorable Mention - 1 WR, 1 LB All-Conference Returning Players - 1st team - 1 DL, 2nd team - 1 DB Honorable Mention - 1 WR All-Newcomer Team: 1 WR, 2 OL, 1 DL, 1 P 13 Seniors next year 4 top 40 MVFC Recruits according to HERO 24 total recruits including 1 JC transfer
TIme to look at the Yotes. Everyone agrees the loss of Streveler is big, but on offense, we also lose Dagel, Van Roekel, and Hale. Fortunately, we return a lot of depth on offense. Our O-line will be the strength of the offense. While we return many players with significant playing time, the competition for starting spots will be tough and I will not be surprised to see other young names rise to starting spots. The other strength of the O is our depth at WR. Look for Crawford and Falck to see increased roles along with the many returning players who shined last year. At TE look for Samson to rise as a goto for any of the QBs, and one of the young talent (Kneifl, Jensen, or Herrmann) at that position will surely rise. While we will miss all that Streveler could do for us, it is not like we will play the season without a QB. While Simmons has some solid experience and a very good arm, do not count out Parks and Tsagalis. This battle most likely will play out in the summer, but the Spring Game will be our first chance to see significant time for both of these challengers. The RB threesome of Fredrick, Henry, and Klett was very effective last year as each brings a different running style. With less emphasis placed on rushing yards from the QB position, these three will need to be a bigger part of the offense. Fredrick will still lead this group, but I anticipate more from the other two. Overall, this is a well-balanced offense that will be a nightmare to prepare for by opposing D coordinators. Anytime your O-line is strong, your offense is strong.
On the defensive side of the ball we lose very little, and most of who we lost, we lost during the season last year. This gave an opportunity for many young players to get valuable experience. I am interested in seeing how the 3-4 defense is compared to our traditional 4-3. I am confident the coaching staff is making this change based on personnel and it will only make us better. Like the offense, our strength is upfront in the D-line. We have tremendous depth and can easily go 3 deep at all positions which allows them to stay fresh. Inside Schultz, Headlee and DeBoer lead a very strong crew. On the edges, Greenfield is the leader, but Cline, Kramer, and Hopkins are all very good. Look for a few new names to rise here as well. At LB, Coker and Alex Gray return to lead the position. It will be interesting to see if Matthew can overcome injury and reach his potential in the middle. Out of the group of Cochrane, Kordus, Joanis, and Amusan, I would expect one or two to clearly take over a starting spot. Andrew Gray and Powell lead the defensive backfield. A lot of young talent got valuable experience last year, and I anticipate some good battles at CB with Armstead and Collins Jr. getting pushed by the likes of Reed and the three redshirt freshmen. A good defense is still necessary to win a championship, and although we are still young, we definitely have the talent and depth on D to help us win.
Not to forget special teams, but we have solid kickers and punters returning and our overall depth showed last year as many players found their playing time on special teams and I would think the same is true for this year. I would expect this third phase to be very good as well.
The last thing to mention is the outstanding job this coaching staff is doing. Yes, we lost a few good coaches, but that is to be expected when you have success. I am confident this staff will have this team ready for the season. We have a good schedule with our tougher games spread throughout the season. Coming out of the three non-conference games with a 2-1 record will be important and I predict that we end up a solid 8-3 with a return to the playoffs and maybe a longer run.

SDSU - 11-3, 6-2 in Conference in 2017, Semi-Finals Graduate: 15 Seniors: 5 Offensive Starters, 4 Defensive Starters, 0 Special Team Starters & 6 others on the depth chart last fall All-Conference Losses - 1st team - 1 OL, 1 TE, 1 WR 2nd team - 1 FB, 1 DL Honorable Mention - 1 OL, 1 DB All-Conference Returning Players - 1st team - LB, 1 DB, 2nd team - 1 QB, 1 K All-Newcomer Team: 1 WR, 1 LB 14 Seniors next year 2 top 40 MVFC Recruits according to HERO 32 total recruits including 2 JC transfers
OK time for a look at the bunnies. Let's face it they are losing a lot in Wieneke and Goedert, but do not forget they are also losing their starting center and left tackle to graduation along with Mengarelli at RB. Add these losses up, and the challenge is to see how much depth they have to fill those spots and how good Christian is at QB minus 3 key offensive weapons and 2 all-conference performers on the O-line. My guess is you will see a drop in how effective they can be. I am sure they will find replacements, but the lack of experience will show. On defense, they bring back a lot of talent and experience on the D-line and LB positions. The LB group might be the best in the MVFC. They are replacing 3 starters in the defensive backfield and they will have a lot of inexperienced players rotating in and out until they can find the right mix. After a tough first game at Iowa St., they can build some momentum and experience with the next two games. We see them the last game of the year in Brookings, and by then, we should know what type of team they really have. I am predicting an 8-3 season and another playoff appearance.

NDSU - 14-1, 7-1 in Conference in 2017, National Champs Graduate: 20 Seniors: 4 Offensive Starters, 3 Defensive Starters, 3 Special Team Starters & 7 others on the depth chart last fall All-Conference Losses- 1st team - 1OL, 1 FB, 1 LS , 1 LB, 1 DB 2nd team - 1 WR Honorable Mention - 1 DL All-Conference Returning Players - 1st team - 1 DB 2nd team - 1 RB, 1 OL, 1 DL, 1 LB Honorable Mention - 1 OL, 1 K, 1 QB All-Newcomer Team: 1 LB 23 Seniors next year 12 top 40 MVFC Recruits according to HERO 27 total recruits
Fact, NDSU is the returning MVFC champion and the FCS National Champions, that alone make them a very tough team. They are losing a lot of very good players, but they are also returning some excellent athletes and a ton of depth. On offense, a strong O-line returns to help protect Easton Stick and make holes for the trio of Anderson, Brooks, and Dunn. They also return their top receiver in Shepherd, but they will need to find some new targets in all their young players. On, defense, the loss of Deluca is big, but they also have a ton coming back. I expect this team to be the favorite again. They cannot get any FBS teams to play them, so instead, they get various FCS teams to visit Fargo resulting in their first 4 games being home games. With 7 home games and only 2 regular season losses at home in the last 5 years, it is safe to say they go 7-0 at home. On the road, they face WIU, Missouri St, UNI, and USD. Their best chance for a loss will come with UNI or the Coyotes! I am predicting a 10-1 season and another good playoff run.
