The MVC should wake up to reality and pursue a merger with the Summit League.

I am fairly certain that Mike Jewett has declined to stay on board with the new staff.

Great Intro presser! Not a lot of our (those of us following along with the progress of the hire/ recruits/ staffing) current questions answered, but it was cool to hear from Coach E. Sounds like they will still take some time on staffing decisions, but no specifics given. In lieu of a no-holds barred press Q and A session, she got a major softball session with Jay... it was still an enjoyable interview (as always with Jay). Has there ever been a no holds barred press conference at USD with a new hire? What sorts of questions would be asked here that would actually be answered? Sorry, not trying to be difficult, but I am trying to understand expectations for a new hire press conference.

If I am AD Schemmel, I would be feeling pretty good right now.
A) We have a football team coming off of its best season with essentially the entire offense returning and what appears to be plenty of depth on D. B) MBB has the most returning minutes (I believe) in the Summit and has backfilled tremendously from the portal. We should be athletic, tall and finally play the type of defense we want. C) WBB has a great new coach coming in. Depending on how the portal shakes out with a coaching change, we should have plenty of talent returning and some exciting new players. Regardless, it appears that Coach E is tremendous with X&O's and is a tenacious recruiter. She immediately reminded me of Coach P. D) VBall remains in the best of hands with Leanna. E) Track remains sure and steady. F) We are pedal to the metal with fundraising and should see that continue to improve when the new CEO of the Foundation is selected/announced. G) We have entered the NIL world and I know the AD wants to push this as much as they are permitted to.
Always a great day to be a Coyote!

I believe we are full now from a scholarship perspective. Looking at the depth chart, I am projecting the following: PG: Chase Forte/Shey Eberwein/Steve Kramer SG: Kaleb Stewart/Isaac Bruns/Evan Anderson SF: Quandre Bullock/Max Burchill/Paul Bruns/Porter Ihnen PF: Ashton Smith/Jevon Hill/Jake Brack C: Mayuom Buom/Cameron Fens Of course, there is some fluidity in there. The traditional position tags don't really translate anymore and very depending on the opponent. I *think* Shey is a PG, but could see him more as a 2. Likewise, Stewart could bring up the ball if necessary. Max is a perfect 6th man, bringing energy and defense. Forte is athletic as heck, so having a guy that can lock down the other team's best guard and also be able to distribute will be huge. We shouldn't be short on rim protection and shot blocking with Ashton, Buom and Fens. Again, we will have loads of capable shooters with Stewart, Bruns x2, Bullock and Hill. We have to be close to the tallest team in the Summit League now. I don't think that's a bad summary at all. I do question if they would play Smith with another big, for spacing purposes. I think Smith is probably a true 5. I would guess they'd play a bit small at least part of the time. That is a very good point. Not sure why I didn't think about that. Probably something closer to the following: PG: Chase Forte/Shey Eberwein OR Steve Kramer SG: Kaleb Stewart/Isaac Bruns/Evan Anderson SF: Quandre Bullock OR Paul Bruns/Porter Ihnen PF: Jevon Hill OR Max Burchill OR Jake Brack C: Mayuom Buom OR Ashton Smith OR Cameron Fens

It is good we have the early trip to Italy this fall. Hopefully that will help the team gel early. It paid off for Craig in his 3rd year.

You sign HS kids in the fall and supplement the roster with transfers in the spring. Standard practice in today's MBB environment.

Are we even looking to add to this class? Did he have an offer from us? I don't think so. I doubt they are. Two of the three guys they signed are considered walk-ons. I doubt they were looking to add another. They are focused on the portal now. Exactly.

There are a couple things that I feel like are being missed in all of this. The first of which is a new found stability - in coaching. Offense - OC - 2nd year; OL - 2nd year; TE - 2nd year; RB - 6th year?; WR - 1st year but from a tremendous program with a great tradition of winning, and experience as AHC, OC, and QB. With Davis and Nagy, especially, getting another year with this offense, I expect VERY big things. Defense - DC - 5th year; DB - 4th year and battled off NDSU, among many others to retain him; ILB - 3rd year, so while we lose players he also knows what we have; OLB - 2nd year; DL - 1st year, but he is ANOTHER Iowa guy. As much I am not an Iowa fan, there is no doubt in my mind they have produced one of, if not the, best defenses year in and year out; also we FINALLY have legit depth at DL. Improvements at DL will go a tremendous way towards providing cushion to the LB and DB positions. With respect to the DB position, I know we lose Harden, but we are also bringing back a ton of experience in guys like Shorter, McKelvey, Barros, Ganeus, and McKenzie. Also, Mike Reid is a transfer from Monmouth that started 11 games and led the team in PBUs. Reading this post just reminds me of how difficult it must be to recruit at USD. The coaching carousel is a revolving door. i.e. This is the 4th coach in 4 years in the WR room. Most of these coaches will or have dipped if the opportunity arises. USD is not an easy sell for recruits. We are lucky to see a 9000 capacity dome 50% full for any home game. Vermillion isn’t exactly a must see . I mean we have a WalMart, a Pizza Ranch, and a Red Roof Inn. Tough sell for top recruits in my opinion. Somebody is doing something right because holding things together the last few years couldn’t have been easy and here we are coming off a 10-3 season. I look forward to this team competing. A revolving door of position coaches is nothing unique, especially at this level. My personal opinion is the most important positions to maintain consistency at are the coordinators and the OL coach.

It was very cool to see Jon's comments about Corey Jenkins. I think it would be a brilliant move for him to keep Corey around and let him be a true COO. Let Jon do what he does best, which is build relationships, set the big picture agenda, work with the higher powers, and facilitate outreach to the fanbase across the country. This is what successful ADs do. They do not micromanage, they empower their deputies and staff to be the best versions of themselves, push them to work hard, set a vision for the entire program and work to build support for everybody (through money and relationships).
I realize he isn't a polished public speaker - it isn't something he has had to do - but Jon knows how to endure himself to people and build loyalty from those he trusts and cares for. I like this recipe. There is risk here, but I think the upside can be great. The guy drips with passion.
