Per @tiastreeter, @sdcoyotesfb Def. Coordinator Jason Petrino is one of 2 finalists for head coaching job at UMary. He served as D Coordinator for UMary from 2005-07

I hope he's been telling recruits he's interested in potentially leaving.

I hope he's been telling recruits he's interested in potentially leaving. I would never want to sign a kid based on deception, but we are at a stage that requires us to have several consecutive strong recruiting classes. This might be one of those things you neglect to mention.

The majority of coaches at this level, especially coordinators, have wandering eyes and aspirations to move up. It's all about resume building and progressing toward a head coaching job. I think the best practice for a coach is to operate as though he'll be there long-term.

Pretty significant considering your defense was much improved this year. Hope he gets the job!

Selfishly, I hope he doesn't. But in all candor, if Jason wants the job, all I can do is thank him for his service to USD, because as Alum said, we have vastly improved, and that improvement came as a result of having p,ayers in the right position, not schemes. Good luck Jason n whatever you decide.

It's inevitable that he goes, I just hope we keep him another year or two.

Best of luck to Petrino, it is another indicator of the success we're having at USD. Would love to have him back to continue to build on a strong defense, but good teams are a combination of talent and coaching. I'm sure there are plenty of other coaches out there that can continue the progress based upon the talent we have in house, and what's coming in this year's recruiting class.

Per Twitter, former UND defensive coordinator Josh Kotelnicki is officially the new head coach for U. of Mary football. U Mary's loss is the Yotes gain.

That's...just...a horrible move by Mary. He spent one season as defensive coordinator at UND, and it was an absolute disaster. They must have really wanted a North Dakota guy. That being said, I'm very thankful we likely get to keep Petrino for another year.

Anyone else think being the head coach for U. of Mary would actually be a demotion from Defensive Coordinator for the Coyotes? I write this after having removed my Coyote-red-colored glasses too. In any event, glad to still have Petrino on the staff.

It's not surprising that Jason didn't get it. Mary's AD is Roger Thomas, former football coach and AD at North Dakota, and Sioux loyalty runs nearly as deep as the Coyote Brotherhood

In any event, glad to still have Petrino on the staff. I thought this same thing. I'd rather be a coordinator at a school in the premier conference in the FCS that gets the opportunity to compete against the big boys of college football at least once a season than be the head coach in the backwaters of D2. UMary is a D2 schools so far removed from the D2 days of the NCC it's not even a comparison. I'd also rather be the D coordinator at UND than the head coach at UMary.
