Coach's comments from Atlanta Falcons:
•Seventh-round pick Tyler Starr has garnered attention for his high-motor style of play. Collins gave his impressions of where the South Dakota product is so far: "He's a young guy. He has some athleticism, he has some range in space. He's doing a good job. He's a little bit behind, I think, from a pass rush standpoint, because as you guys know, it's a hell of a transition from college into the pros, so that's been a little bit of a transition. But he's got a good spirit. He busts his ass every day and I'd be surprised if he didn't continually improve here over the next three or four weeks."

The Falcons have their first preseason game on Friday against the Dolphins, surely we will see Starr out on the field for that one.

Tyler Starr made a pretty good play at the end of the Falcon game. Basically, he covered up the qb who had fumbled the snap and made it impossible for him to recover it. It was subsequently recovered by a Falcon. Starr played most of the second half. But that was the only play where the announcers specifically mentioned his name. They had him lining up at the defensive left end position most of the game.

I thought he looked pretty good against Miami. Only saw him get beat one time when they dropped him back into coverage.
I am very proud of Tyler and where he ended up but I kind of wish he went somewhere that ran more of a 3-4. They have him trying to play DE in a 4-3 system and I just don't know if he's big enough. He shines as a pass rusher.
Food for thought.

Watched the preseason game last night. Starr played most of the second half as first team D had first possession of third quarter. Was playing left end. Unfortunately, I didn't see Starr make any plays. He was effective in hurrying up the play, but no sacks or tackles. I think at this point the best he can hope for is making the practice squad at 117K a year, and then try to parlay that into a more significant position in the future.

I've seen a number of projected depth charts recently; some include Starr, some not. I would be surprised if he were cut outright and not included on the practice squad. Some have suggested that Starr and Jacques Smith are battling for the final spot on the roster. The consensus seems to be that Smith has outplayed Tyler, who hasn't looked particularly sharp at times. Smith, however, was ejected from the Falcons' last preseason game, which could impact his status. It does sound like people remain impressed with Starr's size and ability; he's just raw.

If that is the case, I believe he has to clear waivers before the Falcons can lock him up on the practice squad.

Boy I hope he can make that final cut, but going to the practice squad wouldn't mean the end of the road for Starr at all. Compton had to go to the Redskins practice squad, and I believe made the formal roster by the end of his first year
