Although I am singing to the choir, I want to make another personal appeal to everyone on this board to not only join the Howling Pack, but make a substantial increase. In addition to that, I am also appealing for everyone of us to bring at least 5 new members to the group. If we are going to compete in the MVC and SUMMIT, we have to get serious about raising money to raise the bar on Coyote athletics.
In my opinion, there is far to much "small time thinking" going on regarding raising funds. Historically, people have given as little as they can and want to get as much as they can for their small investment. We need to shed that attitude, and start making commitments that are reasonable, yet enhancing to the existing fund raising efforts. I know I have friends that just sit on their wallets and don't give, and have a million excuses why. And these are people that are capable of giving. Don't be one of those.
Just think how proud we could all be if we could double the impact Howling Pack is making for USD athletics. Our goal should be to raise $1.5M minimum, in lieu of the $600,000 plus now we raise. TEAMMAKERS, the NDSU version of Howling Pack, raises just over $2.5M annually for their department. And I am positive that's growing. And I can also hear it now, it's easy to do that because they are winning. Well my reply is what came first, the chicken or the egg? Let's fund our athletic department as it needs to be, and elevate the profile of Coyote athletics. In addition to that, get your arses down to Vermillion for every home football game, and as many home basketball games as you can. It is no longer just a game, it is an event. Get others involved, and let's create a change of attitudes that can have a profound affect on the future of our athletic department.
Right now we have awesome coaches. Just frickin awesome. Coach Glenn is working his tail off to build a winner. Coach Williams has already produced a winner, and her program is only going to get stronger. Coach Smith, the new basketball hire, is a winner. And he gets it. Not only does he want to compete, he wants to dominate. Did you hear that? He wants to DOMINATE. That just isn't lip service, he wants to brand USD basketball. He wants to elevate our profile. He can do it, but he needs the resources to do it. And Coach Gotts? Is there anyone better than him? Lucky? Miles, a USD Olympiad?
My dad once taught me a business lesson that I think applies here, and one you e heard before. It is this: " YOU NEVER GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION". We have a one time opportunity to turn this thing around and become a player in FCS football, and a competitor with the big boys and girls on the Division 1 scene. Please make two commitments. The first is your time. Time to come to all the games, time to meet others at watching parties, time to recruit other alumni to jump on board. The second is finances. You can't just count on the big boys writing the checks. Believe me, they are important, but what is more important is those that have given maybe a $100 in the past, now giving $1200. It can be done, and the pride we would have by doing that and watching our programs elevate in status is off the charts.
