It is certainly a loss to not have Earl at the QB position for the Yotes. I think he has the ability to be a top 3 QB in the MVFC. Saeger did well coming into the Oregon game after certainly not getting the same amount of prep work as a Earl with the starting unit. IMO USD under Glenn has gradually improved their base of players. Football is the ultimate team sport and I predict the progress across all positions on this team will help keep the Yotes afloat until Earl is back healthy. Beating NDSU and UNI without Earl is even more of a long shot, but there are a lot of games to be played before those two - who knows what the conference will look like by then. The O-Line did really good work against Oregon. Sanders looked like a brand of back we have not had at USD for years. The rest of the RBs looked good too. I am concerned about Bouma losing control of the ball twice during the game. The receiving corps is solid. The TE's are blocking well and Ramsey looked like an electric player when he finally got a catch in the second half. The DL will get healthier (Jacobs, Praska, Ruiz - are all solid and didn't play a snap last week). Our LB corps is deep and have experience. Our DBs looked silly, but come on - who didn't think that would happen. Tyson Graham #8 had the hit of the game and has really found his true position at safety. Wes called a very good game offensively - I thought that was impressive. The punt snaps were on the mark and protection was good. Coverage was good with the exception of the one returned for a TD - wow that guy is fast! There is not another team that the Yotes will face that has that much speed across the board.
All those positives can and will continue even without Earl at QB. Saeger was recruited by Glenn presumably because Glenn and the staff thought he could lead the team. He has a great opportunity- time to play against Oregon to get a taste of the spotlight, a week of practice as "the Guy", a game against an overmatched opposing team in WP that will give him the opportunity to build some confidence, a second week of practice "as the guy" before heading to Missoula for a game that has the potential to set the course for the season's direction.
Have to love Football! Can't wait to see how the team responds. Go Yotes!

Read a tweet that said earl will meet with a surgeon tomorrow to repair thumb. Did the estimated 6-8 week recovery period contemplate surgery?

Well boys, not much can be said that will make Kevin's injury any less sickening. My heart absolutely sank when I heard the news. But hey, that's football. We went out there, got paid, and lived to fight another day.
Going forward -
If it was going to happen, it couldn't have really happened at a better time IMO. We got to see what Kevin can really do as a starter going into the season and he will be back for the majority of the conference schedule (hopefully).
Seager - It's time to step up and take advantage of this opportunity. I thought he handled himself nicely at the end of the game (Oregon's scrubs, who knows how that will translate to MVFC starting D's). Just needs to be confident back there.
Prep - As much griping has been done about scheduling William Penn, it seems like a blessing now. I would not mind seeing Wesley let Seager throw the ball 50 times on Saturday. Let him sit in the pocket, go through his progressions, and deliver the ball. This could be the perfect scenario for developing a young QB fast. We know we can run the ball. We proved that on Saturday. Why not let our RBs rest up a little bit and get ready for the Grizz.
This phrase has never been more relevant to me - Onward and Upward. Go Yotes.

As Always Fight South Dakota! Who would have thought that we'd end up thanking our lucky stars that we have the William Penn game coming up? Such an unpredictable sport this is, and somehow the William Penn game found a way to become interesting. Thankfully we have a fantastic running game to rely on in Earl's abcense. Not only are we deep, we are diverse at the position. Jasper Sanders brings with him a threat that the other backs don't really offer, he is able to make some moves and go out for some easy passes for Seager. Sanders is going to burn some opponents on those short routes this season, I'm very glad that we have him around this season. The coaches all seem to be high on Seager, saying he advanced as much as anyone in camp, perhaps losing Earl won't completely derail the season. He certainly won't be one of the top QBs in the conference like Earl figured to be, but he doesn't have to be with this great offense surrounding him. We shall see when he gets thrown into the fire that is Grizzly Stadium, coming away with a W there will really get this team and fanbase's full confidence in him. We gave them a heck of a fight two years ago, and barely let them by last year, it's not a stretch to think we could take them down this year.

Mick Garry:
USD qb Kevin Earl will be out six weeks according to Joe Glenn. No pin, no surgery.

Here is an article about Ryan Saeger from Mick. Pretty solid insights into the path of Ryan since he got on campus: www.argusleader.com/story/sports/college/2014/09/05/usd-sophomore-quarterbacks-fast-rise-put-test/15115445/I know I sound like an MG appologist, being a Sioux Falls guy. But, anybody that doesn't think MG has stepped up his game this season is just grinding an axe. It may have something to do with changes in the planning and formatting at the Argus, but he has been good for at least 3-4 articles per week for the last month...and that is just football. Also, he had some good nuggets from his chat yesterday.

This might turn out to be Ryan Saeger's job!

I agree Cousin. Mick, likely because of the direction he has received from those above him, has certainly stepped up the USD coverage. It has been a nice change.

I've shared a few beers with Mick before. Great guy. I've never had an issue with him personally or his coverage of USD. I've always known that it's an Argus issue, not a Mick issue. Looks like the powers that be at the Argus have allowed him more USD coverage this year. Good thing.
Now we just need to do something about Scheel's in Sioux Falls. A freaking shrine to the Ag College. Wow, is that frustrating walking in there. I solved the problem by turning around and walking out. I can shop elsewhere.

I can shop elsewhere. This ^^^^^^^^ x 1,000,000. I cannot believe that in what is now probably the largest sports retail store in the region they haven't even made a half-hearted effort to increase the size of the USD section, yet they nearly doubled the State College section. Hell, Iowa State almost has a section as big as USD now. Also, none of the gear I saw was the official Addidas apperal. It was all Nike, Jersey, PING and other side-licensed gear. What gives?

But, but, USD doesn't sell as well. Duh, it's because the USD items they do have are side licensed crap. Selection, there is very little.
ETA: I was at the Sioux City Scheel's last night. Decent selection of USD stuff there I would actually buy.

The folks at Scheels are not dumb marketers. Rather than walk out of the store, perhaps Coyote fans should tell one of the sales associates that they wished there was a better selection of USD apparel. A couple years ago I thought Scheels had increased the amount of USD gear but the next time I was in the store looking for a new USD cap to replace the one I have*, it seemed there was a smaller amount of USD stuff available (and none of the caps were better than the one I have so I didn't make a purchase). I could only conclude Scheels was reacting to what it perceived were the customers' buying habits. The last time I was in the Rapid City Scheels a few months ago, there was a fair selection of SDSU gear but just a smattering of USD gear. There was more Wyoming gear than USD and a several Montana and Montana State items. Somewhat surprising to me was the presence of some UND and NDSU gear. *I admit I have a great Coyote sweatshirt too.

I have done exactly that many, many times and each time I say something I get the excuse that the school up north merchandise sells better. It also doesn't help that the person in charge of the college section is a state grad. You know the saying....you can go anywhere from there including being a low-level dept. manager at Scheel's.
