The folks at Scheels are not dumb marketers. Rather than walk out of the store, perhaps Coyote fans should tell one of the sales associates that they wished there was a better selection of USD apparel. A couple years ago I thought Scheels had increased the amount of USD gear but the next time I was in the store looking for a new USD cap to replace the one I have*, it seemed there was a smaller amount of USD stuff available (and none of the caps were better than the one I have so I didn't make a purchase). I could only conclude Scheels was reacting to what it perceived were the customers' buying habits. The last time I was in the Rapid City Scheels a few months ago, there was a fair selection of SDSU gear but just a smattering of USD gear. There was more Wyoming gear than USD and a several Montana and Montana State items. Somewhat surprising to me was the presence of some UND and NDSU gear. *I admit I have a great Coyote sweatshirt too. So, basically you are saying you went into Scheel's with the intention of buying some Coyote apparel. After perusing the poor selection they offer you left the store frustrated and did not purchase anything. You experienced what Coyote fans do when they attempt to purchase USD gear at that store. And Scheel's wonders why USD stuff doesn't sell as well as SDSU stuff? I don't know, how about a similar selection of product, floor space, and product placement? That might help increase sales and move some merch. FWIW, Walmart in Vermillion, heck the freaking Vermillion Hy Vee, both have a larger and nicer selection of USD apparel than the Sioux Falls Scheel's (the state's main sporting goods store). Chew on that one a while, Scheel's.

I have done exactly that many, many times and each time I say something I get the excuse that the school up north merchandise sells better. It also doesn't help that the person in charge of the college section is a state grad. You know the saying....you can go anywhere from there including being a low-level dept. manager at Scheel's. You can order anything you want online at goyotes.com or come to campus an hour early before a game and go to the campus store. State has had success in the major sports FB, MBB, and WBB - their fans have responded and jumped on the bandwagon. Good for them! Our fans and alumni need to step up as our teams work to do the same. Can't wait until tomorrow - QB play and DL play will be interesting to watch.

What about Dicks? Pretty sure it's a similar story there too. The finger should be pointed at the alumni who aren't supportive of the Yotes.
That was a fantastic piece by Mick. I'm impressed, it gave a very good insight into Saeger's situation and story. If it really has been the Argus holding Mick back then I really feel bad for criticizing both of them instead of just the Argus (which isn't nearly the paper that the SCJ is). Very good piece by Mick

Seems to me OBC and Yotes have a better understanding of the sports-gear situation at Scheels but Yote53 seems very confident of the conclusion he has reached. Let's say Yote53 and usdguy99 are correct. In that case, why bother going to Scheels: the company employs a bunch of idiots and the company's business plan is set on losing money. Yeah, that makes good sense. I wonder how Scheels has stayed in business.

I've politely asked numerous Scheels folks over the years why they have such a paltry USD selection and have gotten the same frustrating answer Yote53 shared above. This topic has been debated ad nauseam on this board and on the board before it. I no longer shop at Scheels unless I absolutely have to. I figure this decision has cost them one rifle, one very nice shotgun, many rounds of ammo, hunting boots, lots of fishing tackle, running shoes, golf balls, socks, several bike repairs, Christmas gifts, etc... I know I'm not alone in this personal boycott and now just buy my USD gear on-line and at the USD bookstore. The biggest reason for the disparity can be attributed to the fact that Scheels sells A LOT of Under-Armour apparel and that happens to be the gear State uses while USD has Adidas. Efforts are underway to remedy the garbage selection on both sides of the fence, but then again, they have been for quite some time. The cure-all will be when we start winning like the Bun Buns and casual fans hop (pun intended) on the bandwagon as has happened with State.
Now, back from the thread drift, seems to me that if Earl had a doppelganger, it'd be Saeger. I watched the latest Coyote Corner and they had a shot of the two Coyote QBs taking snaps before the Oregon game and they looked very similar. To the point I actually rewound what I was watching to see who was who...and then made certain I was seeing who I thought I was seeing in slow motion. Saeger has the same good size and frame as Kevin. We saw against Oregon he can sling it as he went 5-8 with almost 70 yards passing and he can scramble, he has a stable of backs to hand the ball to and a good O-line to protect him as he drops back to go about his business. I think we'll be OK. As Ed used to say, "the cupboard isn't bare" anymore at a lot of these positions. As OBC said above though, the D-line could get a little dicey. Excited for tomorrow.

"...back from the thread drift..." That's an understatement! My two cents on Scheels. I was in there TODAY. They have a better selection of Oregon gear than USD gear. Their NDSU selection isn't far behind. The SDSU stuff is most prominent. I talked to one of the Scheels managers within the last year or so, and he told me that Iowa and Nebraska gear was the top seller. Not sure if that remains the case. There is some truth to the notion that you'll never sell merchandise that isn't offered; however, Scheels is clearly marketing to a demographic that is present within the metro area. Jacks fans show up. If the SDSU merchandise Scheels offered collected dust, they would downsize inventory. It doesn't bother me much anymore. Personally, I'm not a fan of their local college selection. I think the bookstores do a much nicer job.

As for NDSU, you ever been to the Fargo Scheel's? USD fans complain about the Sioux Falls Scheel's. UND fans have a real reason to cry. Fargo Scheel's is a downright shrine to NDSU football, not just the clothing section, the whole freaking store complete with trophy case. I guess it could be worse.

I rarely shop at Scheels, since most of the money ends up in Fargo, and NDSU. I am willing to pay a little extra to buy at the bookstore in Brookings, knowing that the money stays in Brookings.
Back on topic, it appears Saeger is a solid quarterback. This week against Montana will be a good test of his abilities. The 'Yotes schedule from this point on is brutal.

The schedule from this point on is brutal? Check out the Sagarin ratings. Guess who's had the #1 most difficult schedule in all of FBS and FCS football so far: USD. The site has Oregon as the best team in the land and clearly William Penn did not "count"..... Fun with numbers.

Volante Sports today:
Our football reporter @gbos2 got word from Kevin Earl that his hand is feeling good and he could return quicker than originally expected.

I'm not gonna hold my breath, but even if it's a week earlier that would fantastic. Especially since that one week might be the difference between Earl playing against NDSU or not

Just listened to replay of John Thayer/Joe Glenn radio interview and Glenn states Kevin Earl has the cast off and throwing the football with the aid of a brace. He is able to throw 40 to 50 yards already but not with game time power yet. Glenn thought that two weeks out is possible.
Also said the week off was very helpful for injury recovery but there will be a couple guys who may not be able to play this weekend.
