That was a lot closer than it should have been. Are the Yotes gonna be able to stop anyones run game?
I'm nervous.
Go Yotes!

This season could be a hot mess Does anyone know why we left the training wheels on Saeger today? This was our one shot to test out what he can do.

This was an ugly game for us, but I wouldn't see it as a reason to be nearing the ledge at all.
Offensively I thought we did some good things. Saeger came into the QB position rather seamlessly in my opinion, which was the biggest concern on this side of the ball coming in. My biggest gripe about the offense would be that we had drives stalling and had to settle for field goals, but we only had to punt one time on the day, and I don't blame our guys for either of our turnovers. Jasper's "fumble" didn't look like a fumble at all from my seat across the Dome, and upon watching the replay it was very clear he was down before the ball came out. If there was any replay at all that would have been easily overturned, but I guess we don't have replay implemented yet. Saeger's interception wasn't thrown anywhere near the defender, Donovan just couldn't make a play on the ball and knocked it into the defender's lap a few yards away. It could have been thrown better, that's for sure, but it wasn't like Saeger made a bad decision.
Our running backs averaged 6.6 YPC, a number I am very fine with. Jasper Sanders is going to do some great things for us this year. He is very slippery, and able to make a lot of people miss him. I am very glad to have him healthy on top of Bouma and Roberts, plus the option of Vander Maten. I will say I'm surprised we didn't see Kilgore at all today after he had eight carries against Oregon.
My concerns for the offense pretty much come down to Saeger, though I feel he did a good job today at 8-13 with his receivers dropping a few passes. I'm afraid he doesn't quite have good enough vision, at least one of his scrambles he seemed to have a man open but took off anyways, and when he is scrambling he needs to slide instead of trying to leap over defenders. We absolutely can not have him go down to injury, and on his first big collision with a defender he did a complete flip. Unacceptable.
We have to give Bergner some huge credit though. It is clear that he has shaken off whatever freshman jitters he had last year. He is at 4/4 on field goals, with absolute bombs from 47 yards and 40 yards straight down the middle. I swear that 47 yarder against Oregon could have gone for like 55 yards easily. He really seems to be turning into the kicker we were hoping for, a guy that could really alleviate some headaches over the next three years.
Defensively...I really hope we don't play anyone that runs the option again this year, and that our main men on the D-line make it back soon. William Penn is clearly really good at running the ball, that part of their game really didn't look like anything I'd expect from an NAIA team, though we certainly could have done a better job defending it. We had absolutely no answer to the option, no matter which direction they went with it, which is rather concerning since our guys had a VERY good idea of what was coming every time they snapped the ball. It seemed like every single time they went outside with the option it went for several yards, and that's something that you can't put on an inexperienced D-line.
Thankfully our pass defense did their job well enough, holding William Penn to 0-8 passing with two interceptions. The two pass interference penalties called on us were rather ticky tacky, but I don't want our guys putting the refs in a position where they'd even consider throwing that flag when we're playing someone that shouldn't be any trouble to cover.
Again, this was an ugly game, but these kind of games happen all the time when playing someone from a lower division (we have been on the other side, remember that Minnesota game?), just take a look around the nation these first two weeks and you'll see what I'm talking about. What I take away from this is that our offense won't see much drop off at all in Earl's absence, our D-line needs to get healthy now, and our special teams seem to be a strength this year instead of a terrifying liability.
Another year, another win in the home opener. Time to shift the sights towards a Montana team that I really want to beat after last year's heartbreak. They certainly didn't light the world on fire against their D2 opponent today, and their starting QB may miss our game due to a concussion.

I never liked the signing of this game from the start, I especially didn't like it as I was listening to the pre-game while we were tailgating. I heard the word triple option and said "Uh-oh". I believe this will be the only triple option team we play this season. The triple option is a whole different animal to prepare for on defense. It requires individual responsibilities on the defenses part and I saw that breaking down time and again today. Instead of playing the QB the defender would try to slow play and take both the QB and the pitchman. Can't do that when defending this offense. I give credit to WP as they ran this offense very well. The QB and pitchman had great separation and it enabled the RB to gain the edge of the defense time and again, and he was a quick little bugger. In the end I wasn't worried. I knew we had the athletes to eventually overpower WP and win this game, but knew the score wouldn't be pretty, or up to the standards we expected.
Offensively we should have put many more points on the board. It was a more conservative, run dominated game plan, but when we did pass we had receivers running free all over the place. Instead, our backup QB would hold the ball, tuck, and run. The crowd would cheer at a 20 yard QB scramble for a gain, but the play would have been a TD if only the QB would have thrown the dang ball to a wide open #1 or #7 running free down the field. Oh well, a learning experience for the young QB and something he'll need to work on.
In the end a win is a win and the boys steppe dup when they needed to. The score was closer than it needed to be but I will give credit to a very game WP team. They came to play and I'm sure they will have success the rest of the season.
Final words, great crowd, students showed up in force. I was really surprised by the number of butts in the seats. Tailgating was fantastic. I sensed the Yote fans were just ready for another football season and to have some fun.
Montana next week. Time to gear up to get some Griz.

Forgot to add, WP had zero 000 yards passing and 2 INTs. The passing game for them was inept, and it wasn't even close. If the ball went in the air it was a better than 50/50 chance a Coyote defender was coming down with it.
In the end, WP was a team with an unconventional offense. It was difficult to maintain assignments.
Again, a win is a win and looking forward to next week and playing a conventional, traditional FCS squad. The first test to gauge our Coyotes against a peer school.

Watched the game again on tv and a few more things jumped out:
Our LBers and Safeties were tentative, confused, and/or lethargic that game. Credit to WP's blocking. Time for Lage and Johnson to step up. I believe they will this week.
Our young DL looked even worse on TV. They were getting driven back off the ball - sometimes several yards. They need about two more years in the weight room. Jacobs needs to be back and play well for USD to have a reasonable chance. I did actually see Kenny Greer in the student section stands - could really have used him this year.
On the positive side -
The OL is playing well, the RBs are all good, Saeger looks the part and I expect he will make some significant strides. The receivers look fast and with the exception of two bad drops - played well. Bergner looks great kicking this year and thankfully the long snaps have been perfect.
WP was a solid team - congratulations to them. Sorry to hear their QB has broken bones in his elbow. They looked like they wanted to win more than USD and that is perhaps what bothered me the most on Saturday.
The Griz will take a great effort and an extremely well played game to beat.

This season could be a hot mess Does anyone know why we left the training wheels on Saeger today? This was our one shot to test out what he can do. I couldn not agree more. I did not watch the game Saturday but recorded and watched last night. Baffled by our inability to stop that option, but more baffled why we did not open up the playbook for Saeger. I get that we were getting large chunks on the ground, but against an opponent like this, would have liked to see more than 13 pass attempts as well as more shots down the field. It can only help Saegar to go through progressions against a live, unusual defense. On the other side of that, I did like what I saw from Saegar. He is one tough kid and I think his performance should give the offense some positive momentum going forward. As he gets more comfortable, hopefully he settles into throwing from the pocket more and less on the run or on rollouts. Looking forward to this Saturday against the Griz, would be a big one for the yotes and continue to show dominance for the MVFC.

Nothing earth-shattering here, but I wanted to throw out a few last thoughts and observations about the WP game before moving on to Montana.
The alumni-side crowd had plenty of folks in attendance, but I thought we were lethargic as a group. In my opinion, perhaps people weren't too fired up at first because of the opponent. Eventually, a level of annoyance sank in that we weren't destroying said opponent. In contrast, the student section was very full, pretty loud, and mostly stayed past halftime. Good job current students! That was great to see.
I hope the coaches were able to learn something about our secondary with such a small sample size of pass attempts. In my novice view, the PI calls we got were a combination of BS and the DB not turning around once the ball was in the air. I'm sure it's more complicated than telling the DBs to simply turn around. I assume the coaches are on it.
It was frustrating to see the Triple Option's success against us. Regardless of how confusing it is to defend, I have to think a stronger DL performance by us would've blown up several of those plays before they could develop.
I have no idea what we are doing on kickoffs.
I was thrilled not to see any 0-2 yard WR screens.
I still don't understand why we didn't turn Saeger loose. I will say, and I think someone else mentioned this or perhaps it was in the media, he might seem to hold the ball just a half second too long and miss an open receiver because of it. Probably just needs more minutes to get comfortable.
Looks like the Montana game is on Midco. Wonder how that will impact the OBradys attendance. Go Yotes!

94grad is correct. The kick-off situation could become a bad deal against Montana. Everyone remembers what happened last year at the Dome when one got returned for a TD to cost us the game. An earlier poster had commented correctly; with a talented kicker like Bergner, every kick should be to the end zone, no questions asked. Saturday will be a real test for the Coyote defense.
The Watch Party will start at 7 p.m. at Beef's North, with kick-off starting at 8 p.m. The Coyote paw beer glasses that sold out so quickly last time will again be available and we will also have door prizes like shirts, tickets, etc... to give away. The Sioux Falls Howling Pack chapter t-shirts will also be available for purchase. Lots of folks have been purchasing these shirts so if you haven't gotten yours, it's time to do so! Please help spread the word about the watch party and see you guys on Saturday night.
Go Yotes!!!
