I personally think Jeff Culhane (Kevin's nephew) should get a call if a change was ever made.

Another concern for me is that there is ZERO radio coverage in the Sioux City area--none of the Yankton/Vermillion/Sioux Falls stations reach Sioux City. If we want to cultivate a bigger fan base, radio should be an option for one of our larger fan base areas.

Actually, we barely get radio coverage in Vermillion. Comes in very poorly a lot of the time.

Try 91.1, the student station. They are an affiliate now as well, but I also know the student station can go in and out sometimes in Vermillion as well. They pick up the same feed on away games and at home they have their own broadcast from what I know.
And with Jeff Culhane, great idea, except I doubt Lane or him would come back up to Vermillion, well unless Bo Pelini forced them out and lost his cool, but he never does that.....
It would be great to have both of those guys up here. I think they do a great job for the Huskers network, and I hate Nebraska haha.

I honestly don't know what station we could get to carry USD Athletics that would cover this area completely. 620 AM carries Husker football, 1360AM carries the Hawkeyes, and I believe 99.5 FM out of LeMars carries ISU and gets pretty good range. Maybe 1470 AM? I bet someone with Learfield Sports has some ideas. I saw Herbster showing one of their reps around the tailgate earlier this year. I talked to them for a bit. I read the logo on his shirt "Learfield Sports" and exclaimed "Well, it's about time!" www.learfieldsports.com/

I know when the switch was made a few years ago that the rumor was Learfield got it and I was disappointed when they didn't.
I really hope they jump in and take over USD broadcasts. That would be the best for USD, no doubt about it! Thanks Yote!

The discussions on this thread have nothing to do with the title of the thread. However, the discussions are very relevant. Note to Admin - perhaps retitle this thread.
Our radio and TV coverage is lacking. Our radio broadcasts, which some find lacking in quality, have a very limited coverage area. Also flagship station doesn't identify with the Coyotes anywhere close to the days of KVHT. Some may have questioned the quality of Culhane's work in those days, but they bled Coyote red daily. Lane Grindle and Jeff Culhane both did excellent jobs on the daily call in shows.
Our TV broadcasts on Midco Sports Net also have some issues. First is broadcasting the games live, especially in Vermillion, hurting game attendance. Second is that Midco Sports Net is only available to Midcontinent customers. (I believe Midcontinent is for the most part only available in larger towns in SD, ND & Minnesota. Not only does this exclude a large portion of rural SD but also Northeast Nebraska and Northwest Iowa. I have contacted Midco several times urging them to sydicate their broadcasts, similar to FSN, so other cable systems could pick them up, but their responses have indicated they have no plans to do so).
I think in addition to alumni, another untapped fan group are the families of existing students at USD. The only way to create interest in this group. I don't know the demographics of the students on campus, but am guessing that SD, SW Minn, NW Iowa and NE Nebr account for at least 90% of the student population. Therefore any radio and TV broadcast solutions need to be available to all these areas.
I don't know anything about Learfield, but a quick review of their website indicates they may be a possible solution.

A possible answer to the TV question is to have USD do its own productions and have it distributed over SDPTV. Nebraska has programming over Nebraska Public Television, Big Red Wrap-Up, volleyball matches, etc., no reason USD couldn't do the same. We do have a mass comm dept that could take up the challenge.

"I think in addition to alumni, another untapped fan group are the families of existing students at USD."
This is an excellent point--we need to continue to think about untapped potential fans--and family members of USD students are a great example.

I was driving from Bismarck ND to Fargo ND last week and was scanning through the radio stations when I found the UNI coaches show broadcast out of Cedar Falls IA. Nice clear signal all the way to Fargo.
With our strong mass communications school there is no reason we do not do better in radio and FB.
SDSU is on WNAX and you can get that station in fairly well almost all the way to RC. I have picked up WNAX from north of Watertown SD to Kearney and Grand Island NE as well. They have great range. My guess would be a great part of Iowa would be covered as well.
If there is not a station that USD can contract with - why not build a tower in Vermillion and broadcast their own radio station. Become the flagship NPR station for the state (the strongest NPR signal in Sioux Falls comes in from Minnesota) and then broadcast USD sporting events, coaches shows, call-in shows when you want. Televise FB games on SD Public TV with a dedicated crew for USD. Bottom line is USD just needs broader exposure.

Was thinking about this this morning after I heard Warren give the Coyote Minute on 99.1 FM Sioux Falls. The top issues to fix when it comes to USD radio broadcasts.
1) Coverage area: This is obvious and has been well discussed on this board. Hopefully this issue can be fixed.
2) Production value: Lack of good pre and post game coverage. This is where Culhaine excelled. In our last days of D2 they made Coyote football the centerpiece of their Saturday programming. The day started with them picking up the D2 Football This Week program that Brandon from D2Football.com put on and that led into an extensive and informative pregame show. We need this type of programming back. It would be great if there was an FCS equivalent program out there. It would really help the fan base get a feel for our new division, learn about other schools, etc. The in-game production isn't very good now either. Does anyone ever get the feeling that Warren is sitting in a hotel room somewhere calling the game off a monitor? There is no stadium noise in the background, there is just a low dull hum. This is not Warren's fault but it surely detracts from his broadcast and causes them to lack excitement, which leads me to number 3.
3) Announcers: I think Warren is a good, professional announcer with a good radio voice. Sometimes it is difficult, however, to get the feel of what is really going on with the game. Football is a very emotional game and the broadcasts should draw the listener into the radio and take them on that emotional rollercoaster. A third down play in a critical part of the game should have the listener hanging on every word. Culhaine brought that emotion, Paul Allen, the Vikings announcer, the guys who call the KC Chiefs games, even the Iowa broadcast team bring that emotion. Warren’s voice and delivery almost seem most suited for a baseball broadcast. More laid back. Or maybe it is just the production around him that causes the broadcasts to lack emotion. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t think the lack of intensity is entirely his fault.
I'd like to see 1 & 2 taken care of before we do anything with #3. I think Warren needs the chance to show what he can do with a good production surrounding him.
Obviously I’ve tailored this discussion around football broadcasts. I’ll let somebody else cover basketball. I don’t listen to those broadcasts as much. I’ve caught a few here and there and they don’t seem that bad.

Speaking of emotional roller-coaster - did anyone listen to the Augie game yesterday? I did for part of it while out and about - just happened to be listening during some exciting moments. The color guy actually starting laughing during the interception run back for touchdown the main guy was getting so into it. I have to admit, I felt a bit of excitement just listening- that's what a good radio guy can do, and I'm not an Augie guy.
Off point a little, but congrats to Augie on the win yesterday against GVS. Nice job and good luck next week against Duluth.

Another frustration with the lack of good Coyote coverage: No coverage in today's Sioux City Journal on last night's win over Santa Clara or tonight's game with Wyoming. You would think that a game with a Mountain West Conference opponent who recently played tough with a top 15 team (Missouri) playing within 35 interstate miles of Sioux City would be worthy of a few words in the Journal. Their football coverage was pretty good this fall, but their BB coverage has basically been nonexistent outside of post-media days season outlook articles.

yeah the Journal basically forgets where USD is the minute the media day for basketball is over. It's pretty sad actually. They are 35 minutes from USD and they have no desire to be at any of the games. Heck, when the basketball season roles around, they don't even know where Dakota Valley is anymore.
