Nice article on VG and other FCS freshman. We certainly have a great class that is already getting valuable experience!!

He is going to be a bright spot for this program the next three and a half years. Very impressive work so far, especially for a freshman.

I think we have a lot of young talent right now. It reminds me of 2003-2004, when Austin got fired and Ed took over a program that had a lot of young talent returning with 2-3 years of experience. in those early years in the 2000s, there was a ton of Redshirt Freshman and Sophmores that were staring on both sides of the ball. We struggled in those early years, but we gained experience and that was instrumental in the success that we saw in 2004-2008. Hopefully, we have another run like that coming soon and we can sustain it in FCS. If USD can keep infusing some young talent while these guys like Vsn Ginkel mature and turn into veterans, then we have a chance to be pretty good in the future. Not trying to foreshadow or anything like that there, but if this staff does get blown up, maybe a new staff can help take these guys to the next level, a la Ed Meierkort in 2004.

Say what you want about Ed, I will probably agree with most of it, but that first staff that he assembled had a lot of GREAT coaches on it, too. Friedel (DC) is a SD legend, Jim Glogowski (DL/LB) is now the head coach at Simpson College and has revived that program, We all know how good of a coach Glenn Caruso is, Joe Beschorner (RBs) is now the OC at Mankato, who is #1 in D2, Jarod Dodson (WRs) is now a D3 head coach in New York. The list goes on....a lot of times it is not so much the head coach, but the staff that takes a program to the next level.

USD has to keep taking advantage of the fact Iowa, Iowa St., UNI, and SDSU don't seem to recruit northwest Iowa as much!

Congratulations Andrew on finishing 3rd in the nation for STATS FCS freshman of the year!! Quite an accomplishment for a defensive player! The top vote getters were Northern AZ's QB and North Dakota's RB.
