Hayden Fry, the former University of Iowa coach, came to Iowa City in the late 80's to take over a program that had been in the dumps for quite some time. I remember several incidents when they first started winning and they would be exuberant, and Hayden challenged and chastised his team to start believing that they were as good as anyone they played, and to be happy woth wins, but act like they were used to it, and there were plenty more coming. He was one of the greatest "physchological coaches" in the history of the game. But he instilled in his team a certain level of confidence, almost arrogance, that soon came to be their montra. They learned to win, and win the right way.
One never knows if a game like Saturday was a fluke ( in the sense it won't happen often...it was no fluke in the sense we lined up with them, and as Coach Glenn said "touched gloves" and beat them ) or if we can now draw back on this and use it as a springboard to do great things. What it did prove to them was two things. First, they can play with the best and beat them, even on their home field. Secondly, it showed they can overcome a deficit and rally to win a game. Even on the road. They did it in a "lunch bucket, blue collar style". Nothing flashy, just getting in the pits and duking it out.
My hope for this team for the rest of the year, and heading into the future, is they use this game as a springboard to great things. I don't know if they will, but they do. And if they believe it, they will do it. If they believe it was indeed just a "fluke", then it will merely go down as one of the greatest upsets in the history of Coyote football.. Either way, it was a fantastic win. My hope is they now "expect" to win every game from here on out. They are good enough to do just that, I hope they believe it as well.
Guys on the team, thanks for a great Saturday in Fargo. I know I'll never forget it. You earned it, you deserved it, and your fans have been reinvigorated. You will see an amped up crowd Saturday. Now.....believe you can do this every game. I think good things are on the horizon. Thank you again for lifting the spirits of Coyote Nation.
