I moved this thread drift over from the UNI thread. Good discussion going on here.

No doubt that the 2015 defense is head and shoulders above any D in recent memory. I don't think its even close. This defense compared to any during the late D2 era is comparing apples to bowling balls.

LOL. This thread is ridiculous. I'm sure it's true for most former players, we sit in the stands and say things like "back in my day" or "when I was playing". Let's be realistic, the level of football the coyotes are playing at now is the highest it's ever been.

Talent is deeper now than it was 10 yrs ago at FCS. But this USD team is very talented, Defensive wise especially. As a person who attends USF games as my wife is alumni, USF, Mankato, UMD and Augie have become much deeper since the four big schools went FCS. Also follow hs recruiting in this state..... The overall athleticism and talent is better in SD then 10 yrs ago.

As more and more schools' strength & conditioning programs get better with time, of course athletes will be better. You will still never convince me that USF, Augie, UMD, are at the level of the elite NCC schools, even at the end of the NCC. D2 football is as bad as it has ever been, mostly because of what I said earlier in this thread about the Midwest's best football schools going to FCS. I still believe that the same kids that would have gone to XDSU, USD, UND at the end of the D2 era are still going there, and the story is the same with kids going to Augie, USF, UMD are still going there, too. Any player that would have been a good/great D2 player from this region is going FCS. Of the good players at Augie, USF, UMD, maybe a handful would've received offers from schools that are now FCS (XDSUs, USD, UND) Of the good/great players at the FCS schools now, the majority of those kids would have still received offers even when those schools were D2.

I cant speak to that not being an expert on the old NCC. But on USF alone they have numerous guys that received offers from FCS or FBS teams... Gentry, Papillion, Tidwell, Johnson, and Krakowski from the Yotes. Of the homegrown talent, some were under recruited IE St. Pierre who is the SD state leader in interceptions. Remembering the USD teams since the beginning of HS (2001), id say some USF starters might have not been starters at that level. I also played HS football with two D1 FCS recruits and can say they were too talented for D2........I just think you cannot say a handful because this region is loaded with D2 level talent.

I would guess that the USF, Augie, and Kato of today would have competed pretty evenly with the NCC of a decade ago. My point is that the level of play, across all divisions, is much better than it was a decade ago.

Nobody will ever convince me that the offense of this year would even be close to the offense of 2005 because there is no comparison. In pretty much every skilled position the team from 2005 was better. The defense of today is better than the defense of 2005 but that gap of the offense in comparison is wider than the gap with the D comparison.

It's too bad that 2005 team didn't have a game against D1 competition to really settle this argument. The closest we have is the 2006 team losing 24-0 to Central Arkansas, who was D2 at the time but moving up like USD was. They went 4-3 against D1 competition that year (beat Missouri State, Stephen F Austin, SHSU, and Georgia Southern, lost to Illinois State, SDSU, UC Davis). Seems the 2006 team was pretty comparable since we made the playoffs that year and did not in 2005.
May I ask how in the heck that happened? 9-2 with an NCC title and not invited to the playoffs? Follow that up with an 8-3 regular season and get invited? Did the committee just feel they owed us one?

The 2005 team and 2006 team were not great on the road losing games to teams they should beat. When USD played a very good UNO team in 2005 and beat them something like 59-7 that was something to behold. Gearman was a track athlete that could actually player receiver. No one on the 2015 defense could cover him. No one could stop Logan consistantly and Beschorner would pick apart the defense. The defense this year is good against the run but the 05 team would pick apart the secondary with big plays. Caruso would have figured out a way to move the ball. Even with a tough run defense Logan would find his holes. The mid 2000's team were not very good on the road so I doubt they would win any of the road games in the Valley but they would have probably been undefeated at home. That offense was like a steam roller in the dakotadome and they would flatten anyone that got in the way but they were Jeckyl and Hyde home and away.

Coyote Fan, nobody has ever been able to convince you of anything. So why bother now.

Aside from the '05 team - how about a shout out to the 1986 team? Playing for a nation championship doesn't happen every day!

I agree 88grad! The 86 team was GREAT and had to win a road game at Cal Davis in the playoffs and beat Troy (who now is FBS) in the Dome. Their overall record including the playoffs was 11-3. Two of the three losses were against NDSU who won the championship vs the Yotes.
