Aside from the '05 team - how about a shout out to the 1986 team? Playing for a nation championship doesn't happen every day! I was a toddler when this team was playing so I really don't know anything about them aside from making the NC game. Has to go down as the best team in USD history though I would think.

The 2005 team was good but the simple fact was they didn't make the playoffs and that is the bottom line. If they would have won at St. Cloud or at Duluth they would have made it. Those types of road games haunted the program during that era. The 1986 team on the other hand proved their metal home and road. They made the playoffs and went to the national title game which speaks for itself.
I am a basic believer in evolution. The difference between the talent level 2005 to 2015 isn't a huge difference but the talent level including size and speed would probably equate to the 1986 teams not to be able to beat either 2005 or 2015. Against teams in their era the 1986 team was the best of all three teams mentioned. One thing that does hinder the 1986 team is that they didn't win the NCC. Some of the 70's teams that did win the NCC have a spot in this argument as well.
I value the ultimate prize so in my opinion the best sports team in Coyote history is the 1958 Mens Basketball National Champions. 2nd is a tie between the 86 football team and the 08 Women's Basketball team. If I forgot a cross country team or something I apologize.
