Well, if they look to promote from within that would be either Jake Sprague or Adam Breske. It would seem to me Sprague would have the head up however.

After seeing how the defensive line performed this year, I don't think Jack Sprague is ready for the move to defensive coordinator. I don't think it would be the right route to go with one of the current assistants. I would feel a lot more comfortable if they brought someone in from the outside.

To be fair, I think the D line was partly a product of youth.

That is a good point, but doesn't he recruit the d-line and a tight end was one of the best performers outside of Giese? I need to see more out of Sprague yet. I like Breske more than Sprague as well. I always thought he was bright and a nice guy as well. But may be too soon?

Losing Chuck Morrell was one of the biggest losses that USD football has endured under Ed's regime. Right now USD is undercoached on offense, defense and on special teams. Probably underfunded as well. In my opinion Chuck was one of the only bright spots of the 2010 season. I predict that USD will be in very serious trouble next year especially if we don't have a change of guard at QB and RB.

I think Chuck Morrell was ok but certainly not great at our level as a D-Cooridnator. My personal opinion is that Chuck couldnb't get enough out of his kids and wasn't very good at motivating.
Chuck is a very fine person, don't get me wrong. But D-Coordinators need to be aggressive, feisty, and a little bit mean. Their team needs to reflect that.
There are coaches out there that can fill this void. But the point I do want to address with you Coyote Fan is that we do have one thing in this state that hurts our program, and that is the 1 year contract. It is hard for Ed (or any other head coach) to bring in quality assistants and assur ethe kids they will be there from year to year.
I know for a fact that the UNI coaches use that as a recruiting tool against USD and SDSU, and why wouldn't they.
Now what I do agree with you on from your past posts is that we don't recruit the defense like we do the offense. If we are going to compete and win in the Mo. Valley, we will need to shore up our D. We just aren't physical enough.
Overall, I do think Ed is the right man, and I will stand behind it. I would like to see him change some things as well, but overall, we are doing fine. Even next year won't define us as a program, but 2012 will.

Seriously maybe their needs to be a lawsuit filed to get that policy changed. I would think that something could be done to put South Dakota closer to the 21st Century.

We agree on that. I imagine it starts with the BOR? I am not sure, but this is an area that outsiders could assist Sayler in accomplishing this goal.

I don't know how a lawsuit would fix it. What we need to do is elect officials in this state that will take action and do something about it instead of just sit around and feel like they were given the position and nothing has to be done. When I did a story about this for the Volante, Ben Nesselhuf didn't have a clue state employees only had a one-year contract, and he was on his third term by then. Keep bugging your elected officials.

I'm not sure a one year or five year contract would have changed much. I got the impression he didn't get along well with Ed.
I wish him well, don't get me wrong, but I hope the next coach has better chemistry with the team and fellow coaches.
