Well, it seems USD has a good defensive coordinator since Jarod Dodsen, who left after one year as the D-Coord to go to Buffalo.
Now, Chuck Morrell has a very real possibility of leaving. He is one of the two finalists for the Montana Tech head coaching job. The NAIA school also has the tight ends coach of central Washington as one of the finalist. I think Morrell is a slam dunk at this point.
I am not surprised considering how much Morrell's defense dominated NAIA.

Good for Chuck--but I think bad for us. It would be nice to have some continuity for next year. Is Montana Tech Head Coach a step up from USD Defensive Coordinator?

Good for Chuck--but I think bad for us. It would be nice to have some continuity for next year. Is Montana Tech Head Coach a step up from USD Defensive Coordinator? Good question. Money obviously plays a part of it. Coach Morrell earns just shy of $48k as defensive coordinator (that's public record, not speculation). Not sure what kind of scratch comes with the Montana Tech head coaching gig. I'm also not sure there's any true path to moving up through the coaching ranks. People jump from coordinator to head coach (and vice versa), down a level, up a level, and laterally. I don't necessarily judge his candidacy as a slight against USD football. I'd also like to see some stability in the d-coordinator spot. I'm not convinced Coach Morrell has had enough time to truly make his mark on this team. If he's as effective as advertised, he'll be a valuable asset as we progress toward the MVFC.

I see this as a step down. Sure, it would be a head coaching position, but the goal of many coaches is to get a head coaching job at as high of a level as possible. If he were to be a successful D coordinator at USD and in the MVFC then an FCS or, at minimum, D2 head coaching job is a great possibility. I don't see being an NAIA head coach as being as direct of a career path. Plus, Montana Tech competes with Carroll (MT) who has dominated NAIA alongside USF, so the path to national (probably conference) dominance would go through them.

Money talks.
48k?
I have no clue what coordinators make in IAA, II, III, or NAIA schools but that seems pathetic.

Hopefully we can keep Morrell at the U - I think another year would really show the improvments he could make to the defense. He is also an excellent recruiter.
I agree 48K is not a great salary. This is also another example of the need to allow multi-year contracts for coaching positions.

I would think a coordinator position at the FCS level in the MVFC should have a startin salary of $75,000 to $80,000. That seems reasonable to me.

The Montana Tech head coaching job will pay between 60 and 70K (plus the added bonus of high school summer camp revenue). I don't know about the rest of you but a pay raise of between 12 and 22K is not bad (if indeed he makes $48K now). I know I could use an extra $1000 or $2000 a month which is what his bump in pay would be + camp revenue as a bonus.

Doesn't look like the strongest candidate to me compared to Coach Morrell. I am hoping that we can somehow persuade him that staying at the U would be better for him and his family....pay raise?!!?

The other guy must be a pretty strong candidate to get selected as one of the final 2 despite all the baggage he has accumulated in the past 2 years, but I agree Chuck appears to be a better candidate.
Hopefully Chuck can be convinced to stay at the U. (more $, etc.).

That's how it is at this level, decent coordinators don’t stick around long.
So now the search for a new dc begins.

Is this the guy that has a cliche for everything? Jim Rome did a whole bit on his radio show about this coach. Loved him.
So, any ideas as to who will take over as DC?
