Can someone clarify some recruiting rules for me? Per Verbal Commits, the rabbits have a whopping 18 offers out for 2017 & 2018 verbalcommits.com/schools/south-dakota-state. It shows the Yotes with only 3, but neither of the two listed above are noted. My question - is over-signing allowed in basketball? I know it was common practice in the SEC for football, but I think some of those rules where changed as it hosed a bunch of kids each year. Anyone know what the rules are? PS - I know that an offer isn't tied directly to over-signing. A fair question is why in the world would they offer 18 players - but my question is about over-signing.

The main issue is because there's two coaching staffs that have put out offers. Half of the 2017 offers probably aren't even correct. But they have a pretty aggressive staff too. As for over signing, it does happen. Typically they'll get a signing in the spring towards the end of the season and by that time they'll already be letting a kid know he needs to transfer. Happens at many levels. Not saying it's right.

Happens at many levels. Not saying it's right. I also wouldn't be shocked if some of the kids have had offers pulled as other recruits have accepted offers. Those situations must be sort of tough for Verbal Commits to sort through, though, since I haven't ever seen a kid tweet "Un-blessed to have had my offer pulled by _____ State!!!" USA High School Sports recently did an article/interview on how Billeter recruits at Augie and this was his explanation for how he and his staff handle the number of recruits/scholarship offers they have out: Not trying to be annoyingly pro-Augie or anything (sorry if it seems that way), just thought the part about offers on the table applied to this conversation. EDIT: I suppose the only time I have seen that type of "had my offer pulled" tweet I mentioned was, coincidentally, the kid USD had initially offered that eventually ended up at Northern. Justin Decker, right? But that's not a common occurrence from what I can tell. Or maybe I just don't pay close enough attention to recruiting.

Different coaches and different situations will result in different methods. I am aware of one in state recruitment of a high school girl. The coach offered her a scholarship with a 3 or 4 day deadline. She was not ready to make a life decision that quickly so she passed and waited for an opportunity more on her terms. The first college coach then made a similar offer to another girl who had attended the same camp. Both girls ended up playing college basketball in situations that suit each very well.

He also appears to have retweeted a couple of tweets claiming his offer was from SDSU. No tweets from him directly either way, but it did lead to a little bit of confusion over on the SDSU board.

Surprising commit from a kid who could have really gone anywhere in the area.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like he may have wanted to get away from home. His top five was Davis, Denver, Kent State, Indiana State and Southern Illinois.
