1) 30 is the scholly limit per year 2) Usually 85 kids will be on scholly, but FCS only has 63 *FULL* schollys so they are divided into 85, however the coaches deem best. 3) Roster size is 95, meaning the limit to attend fall camp. So 10 non-scholly kids can participate in fall camp. 4) Any player not on the 95 man roster can join the team when school starts, which limits the possibility for a non-scholly kid to break into the lineup. Now- looking at the last 2 recruiting seasons 1) Last year hit the 30max and this year will hit max so 30+30-95, which means the majority of the 60 will be RS Frosh and Frosh. 2) Kids that scholly is not renewed likely transfer, expect around 20 to leave the program *Keep seeing PWO, however alot of those kids are likely just walkons 1)Preferred walkon is a kid not on scholly, but is on the 95 man roster 2)This could change at anytime, there is no guarantee I understand a few guys becoming scholarship casualties, but 20 seems really high.... I played during the FCS era and I only remember a few rare instances of guys getting their scholarships pulled. I would actually be shocked if we had 20 guys leave before fall camp next year. My guess is there are a lot fewer full scholarship players on the roster than anyone realizes. One of the biggest challenges of playing in the FCS is the scholarship limit, and I am guessing Bob and his staff have carefully divided the 63 that we have. If we had 20 players leave in one off-season (without a coaching change), we could really put the program in a bad spot long term with regards to recruiting. You know every kid that is looking to transfer is talking about it with their high school coach, and it only takes 1 poor experience to get on that coach's bad side. As a staff, you need high school coaches to be comfortable sending players to you. If you don't think high school coaches have a huge part in recruiting, look at Brandon Valley. That coach won't let USD anywhere near his kids for some reason and they end up funneling all the talent to SDSU.

I meant kids in the program today scholly + no scholly and departures for various reasons... There are a lot of factors why kids leave, some grades, homesick, loss of love for the game, no path to play, loss or reduced scholly, etc.... So this is what I based my numbers on: 1)The program will usually have anywhere from 110 - 125 players so using the low number, just on walkon's the player count is 25... My guess this is an area where most kids are lost. 2)In a two year period you have to account for 60 accepted offers... Being the the majority of kids from the previous class are redshirted and the incoming class take up 30 schollys you end up with the majority of schollys assigned to freshman. Here is where decision time comes for the coaches because you brought in 60 and there were already 85 players on a partial or full scholly -minus the grads on scholly -soph,juniors, seniors will only have the 25 + openings from grads -usually walkon's that are at least a 2 (backup) will get a partial scholly, counting against the 85

Have to think the COA helps. Allowing you to give out more 50% scholarships that when added with COA make 100% although still being limited to 85.
Had also heard the BV coach won't allow USD to recruit his players. Wonder if that has gone on forever or was something that started under a specific coaching staff? Seems like it would only hurt the kids.

This scenario is not all that uncommon. I recall Washington state pulled an offer last sec from a kid where my older played and resulted in the HC no longer allowing WSU to recruit their kids. Recruiting has changed though, there are numerous recruiting agents in our area that make a living landing kids plus all the online available tools. Hopefully the losers aren't the kids....

If such a thing exists at BV it would have to be from one or two coaches ago. To continue such a personal policy is petty and only limits the opportunities available to his kids.

Hurting the kids is right. Doesn't matter what caused this coach to do it.

Is UNI recruiting him as a RB? I know he was recruited at USD for CB. I figured he would switch if he got a FBS offer. I'm a little surprised he flipped to another FCS unless the position preference came into play.

Tough break. Hopefully the last. I wondered if Sims maybe played same position and didn't want to get nudged out? Maybe he just wants to stay in Iowa? Probably won't find out.

On 247 his measurable's state the following: Ht 5-8 Wt 178 40 4.69. I do think the recruited position makes a difference and as always distance from home makes a difference. Recruiting has a lot of moving parts, anyhow best of luck, hope he has success in the classroom and football field.
