I know we're just moving past the holidays, but I wanted to throw a topic out there for discussion that often pops up amongst fellow USD alums. It's no secret USD needs a basketball facility and certain upgrades inside the Dome, but what does Vermillion need?
I'll kick it off by saying Vermillion needs a quality sports bar, a place at which people truly congregate before and after games. Pros is the ideal location, but, IMO, it falls well short. As a general proposition, Vermillion simply needs to be more forward-thinking with its business development. I hate to admit it, but Brookings is head and shoulders above Vermillion in that regard. Thoughts?

By the way, the new steakhouse is a great addition.

Where is the new steakhouse at? Downtown www.theredsteakhouse.com/I should also add that the purpose of this thread wasn't to dwell on the negative. The USD campus has transformed brilliantly since I was a freshman (2000). It's probably more a commentary on what I perceive to be a lack of community development around a thriving university.

What's wrong with Whimp's in Burbank, or Wild Bill's in Gayville? The Spink Cafe has prime rib night on Friday's. It's pretty good.
Oh, you meant a little more upscale. Yeah, Red's is that. If you plan on going call ahead a couple days to get a reservation otherwise you may not get a table.

Red Steakhouse is definitely the best place to eat in Vermillion, there is no doubt about it. Also, definitely the classiest too. Sorry to all of the other establishments, but it's really the only place like it in Verm. The menu is delicious.
Other things Vermillion needs, still more restaurants. I am in Mitchell now, and place with no D-I University, and even though it's a different community, there are so many more places to eat than in Vermillion and Yankton combined. A lot of that has to do with the Vermillion businesses not allowing other restaurants to come in and jacking up their prices for the land. It does make the community less attractive honestly.
A good sports bar is also a must. Pro's isn't cutting it, I agree with Yotemeal. They realize they are by the Dome and will get business regardless, but I feel like they don't make an effort and live by that. Leo's is okay, nothing special though. There needs to be a Cubby's like place in Vermillion.

Mitchell's restaurant/retail numbers are really helped by all of the interstate traffic, but I from my travels there I didn't think they had that much better of a selection of restaurants than Yankton.
I actually think that Vermillion has some very good places to eat. Silk Road, Chae's, Mrs. Smith's and Red are all very good.

Amen on Chae's - best Chinese in a 3 state area. I can't leave town without at least ordering it to go if I don't stop in. To appease the family I have to go to whimps or mexico viaho (sp) every now and then. But Chae's is the best.
It's nice to have Red in town. Great addition.

As far as the topic goes, Vermillion has plenty of bars. The issue is if one remodels will the students just trash it in 4 months anyway. Take a look at all the bars that did remodeling in the last 15 years, like bathrooms, how many of them are already back to college form.
Cubby's is a nice place, it would be nice if Pro's would do a little remodeling.
Yotemeal is right, all of the new buildings at USD look nice. Then you drive around town and see all the near condemned houses. To give some credit, there have been a couple nice new additions to business. The new strip malls east of campus on Cherry Street - like where Little Italy's is located. The new gas station east of that, and the new business development across the street from the Neuharth Center. I think there's a bank or real estate office, a new Coyote something gas station.

My first drinking was done in Fat Daddys in Gayville, which i believe is now Wild Bills, correct?

What Vermillion needs is a couple more MAJOR employers. Unless you work at the University or own your own business you are travelling to Yankton, Sioux City, or Sioux Falls to work. There are a lot of people I went to school with that would love to move back to Vermillion but don't because of the lack of opportunity.
