As mentioned in a post last night I drove from Rapid City to attend the WI game Saturday. My two granddaughters (9 and 7 and future USD students) visited USD for the first time and are super excited to be future Coyotes! I thought they could get a picture with Charlie Coyote but unfortunately he spent the whole game standing in front of the Coyote Crazies which in MHO was a waste of time. In past years he roamed the permanent seating crowd posing for pictures with kids, helping motivate those fans, etc. If anyone has any contacts I'd recommend that become the practice again. Also any student giveaways should be done in the 4th Q or right after the game to reward those students who stayed and not at the beginning of the game. I'm the world's least creative person but maybe some kind of Coyote Crazies activity right after the game for those students wearing CC t-shirts (which could be one of the giveaways).

I agree Charlie is pretty much non-existent these days. Rarely see him during games other than in the student area. Charlie used to be much more fan oriented during games.

Agreed. Looks like Drew Ritchie is in charge of spirit teams. Maybe send him an email: Drew.Ritchie@usd.edu

Only way to catch Charlie anymore is maybe during pre-game in the tailgate area when the team does their walk, maybe with the band. Charlie just hasn't been as accessible as in years past when he used to roam the concourse and walk through the main grandstand. My oldest son and his friends used to play with Charlie all of the time. They would follow him around and pull his tail, that was about a decade ago. We're having a tough time getting a picture with my two year old daughter this year, although he did take one with her last year. Doesn't matter so much as my daughter has taken to the baton twirlers and is a big fan of theirs.

This seems to go back to making game day an event, not just a football game. Tailgating - through the eyes of a family or kids or someone who doesn't drink - often looks like little more then groups of people drinking outside instead of inside at a bar. There isn't much difference. We need the drum corp to march around playing, handful of brass instruments going to various spots playing the fight song, cheerleaders and Charlie seeking out kids for pictures/facepaint, inflatables, food trucks, loud music, etc.

I decided to call Drew Ritchie rather than email him. He was very receptive to getting Charlie to spend time in the permanent seating area. I also mentioned gopheryote's ideas about inflatables, etc. He thought those were great ideas too. He's only been at the U since April but seems very receptive to ideas anyone has to make Saturdays more of an event. I would encourage everyone to email him or give him a call at 677-7249 with any ideas you have.
