Another reason I'm not that high on the Summit. There is/was just too much unprofessional stuff going on between Douple and UND. The Summit interjected itself into a controversy they should have left alone. If the Summit didn't want to look at UND because of the name controversy, Douple should have kept that to himself and not made it public. The BSC, in comparison, makes the Summit look like a second rate operation right now. Some random thoughts on the subject: I tend to agree with yote53's sentiments about keeping one's nose out of someone else's business. But, that's one of the reasons why I think what Douple said to the Fargo Forum last week had authenticity: He was asked to get involved. That's what he told the reporter and I take him at his word on that. (I know Tom a little bit.) Keep in mind that at the time, UND was all torn up over the threat of having to change the mascot/name while at the same time UND was scrambling to get in a conference and deal with D1 transition. Personally, I've thought UND lacked good leadership for a while and the current Pres and AD came into a mess involving the mascot and name. They must have viewed it as a lead weight around UND's neck that had to be shed right away so the school could move forward in the D1 transition and search for a conference. I know Tom Douple a little -- he's a good guy. Give Douple a fair listen. You'll like him. He's very open to questions so fire away. Some of the UND fans who frequent their message board, continue to really struggle with the mascot issue. I think it's sad because that train left the station and it's time to look forward.

Douple was asked, gave his opinion and yeah it may not have been the most professional, but I know the AD at UND was happy Douple said it I bet, especially from the comments he made on ESPN. Look at what the Big 10 Commissioner has said in the past year, I think Douple is mild compared to that. I am not sure that it was Douple's opinion, but a statement for the conference. I am not sure what the AD specifically thinks of the nickname. I am sure that he has had his fill of the topic though. As a UND fan, I don't mind the Commissioners statement. I just wish he would be more available to answer follow-up questions. The media in Grand Forks has asked for interviews with no luck. A number of media outlets in Grand Forks are frustrated by this and have made it very well know that the Commissioner’s Office will not return calls or grant requests for interviews. Again Douple's comments on a national level are not a big deal. But in North Dakota with the settlement being between the "State of North Dakota and NCAA" to say UND's schools President was working behind the scenes with a conference that may imply the other state school NDSU's involvement could get tricky in a hurry.

Sorry if Douple said something that so many people, including those like the President and AD have said, that the nickname has to go. Honestly, whatever Douple said, who cares. I think he has been great for the league and UND has only shot itself in the foot. Great they are going to Big Sky, but with the way their programs are, it's not exactly a great move for them. That's an athletic program that has moving downward, not upward, since the whole logo thing began. Basketball - they have been down for several years. They are actually showing some progress this year and the AD is on record as saying this is the future growth sport for UND at the Division I level. He is ready to commit the resources to make this happen. We will see how it goes. Women’s Volleyball has taken a big jump up in the last couple of years and softball has definitely improved. The women basketball team has struggled but it is the hardest transition on the women’s side. The football program was down this year, but they are working through the transition. Plus they lost a very popular head coach and a good portion of the staff at the start of the transition. It is taking time to build the program back up. Men's hockey is fine and the women’s program is on its way. As the new coach said, I have the recruits ready to go for the next two years. His expectations are national championships. I would say it is a strong bet that the women’s program will be the next hockey program at UND to win a national championship. Two years ago, the program was a complete mess. So, I might have the green glasses on but the programs at UND are doing fine. Could they be better sure, but that is what the transition is for.. The travel in the Big Sky is no worse than the travel in the GW plus out of conference games. If anything it helps because the home schedule will be better.

Football is down and men's basketball may be on its way up now, but i need to see more than one year out of it. Women's bball is still good, just not as good as it used to be, which was a pretty high level. That's 3 of the top 3 programs right there, which means downward.

People give them jabs about hockey but the program brings more recognition and resources than FCS football ever will. * * unless there is a dramatic shift in the structure of FBS and FCS football

Agree with pierreyote about UND Men's hockey. I know not a lot of South Dakotans follow hockey, or college hockey for that matter, and I understand that fact. But don't underestimate the amount of revenue or national recognition that program brings to UND. It might not be big here but in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, the Northeast (Boston, Maine, etc.), Denver, even Canada, the college hockey playing areas of the country across the northern US, North Dakota hockey is very well known and respected.

Yeah, I agree with the hockey at UND, but it's on the same level as before, and when the nickname stuff hits, how much does that affect the money that the team gets from donors that are pissed. Honestly, it could take a hit, it will still be competitive I bet, but it could take a hit.

Sorry about the thread drift - only meant to say that the transition and coaching changes have had way more impact on the sports programs than the nickname. Yes, merchandize sales will go down and should return to normal in a couple of years. Overall giving to the boosters may go down.. the transition plan to D I called for 1.8 m last year and they hit 2.1 or 2.2 m. They still have work to do, but they are trending up. So, we will see. Back to Douple it would be interesting to get his take on the following: - Summit League Tourn last spring was down in attendance, better than Tulsa but still down. Do they have anything new planned this year to bring a attendance back. How are corporate sponsorships doing? - How does he plan to address football for future expansion and how is the working relationship with MVFC? It took last minute changes to get a new team in.. - Any conference media packages in the future for regular season games? I see Oakland, ORU and UMKC games on FCS from time to time.. NOTE: ORU/SDSU game on tonight - might check it out. Again, I did not mean to start the hockey slant - I know you guys hate that type of talk and don't beat up on UND too much this weekend (I hope Thomas doesn't get us again and man is it nice not to see Cain) - peace

Mr. Douple did a great job. We were lucky to have him take time to do this. I'm excited for the tournament this weekend and hope to see a lot of Red in the stands.
He talked about expansion prospects. He didn't name really any particulars, but some obvious potential hints are Chicago St, Houstan Baptist, St Cloud (potentially would drop football), and Nebraska Omaha (not sure about football because I always thought UNL didn't want them competing on D1 level). He talked about future plans of adding football to the conference. They would need six teams minimum to do that, they have four currently in the conference with football. He talked about UND being a potential down the road member. I think he wants the 4 Dakota schools as a core group, which makes sense. He talked about the Summit being a midwestern conference and didn't really want teams that weren't in the midwest. He gave a little background history on himself and his family. He talked about Sioux Falls being a potential future site of BB tournaments, but they are competing with others and it is now open for bid for 2013. Next year is in SF again. He talked about the national exposure SF is getting from hosting the tournament, and what games are on TV this weekend. There may be blackout issues for people in SF - they want butts in the seats. He talked about the Summit being the 17th best BB conference in power rankings - out of 32 conferences I think he said. Big Sky is 23 by the way. If I can think of anything else I'll post but that about covers the topics. He did a great job and I thank him for coming. We had a nice crowd today.
Please join us next Thursday for Scott Pohlson - Dean of Enrollment.
