Who says hockey is not big in South Dakota?

I think this is going to be a really big deal. Hopefully it becomes a regular destination.

A little surprised that (along with d2 wrestling & volleyball) is all they got.

This is a huge opportunity for USD. Abbott, Herbster, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority, Sioux Falls big money sponsers, Sanford, whatever. The Premier Center would be a perfect home for USD hockey and would bring many neutral fans to their games. This is a big way for USD to capitalize on the Sioux Falls market. It would be a serious way for USD to make their mark and get a step up on SDSU with something that would be their own in a market starving for college hockey.

Did UND have anything to do with the Sioux Falls part of this, or are they hosting because they are a nearby team that may be participating?

I think a lot of this did have to do with UND as they apparently vouched for the Sioux Falls site. U of Minnesota and some of the other regional clubs would also bring plenty of fans.

UND put in as the host at this off campus site. Expect to see this event in Sioux Falls every couple of years if SF wants it. They will. It will be sold out.
Agree with Coyote Fan, USD is missing an opportunity to really seperate itself from SDSU.

The discussion has been held on this board, but clearly USD has no interest in that opportunity either. They could mark me down as a supporter even though I've only been to a few games in my life (all a blast).

I'd totally be on board with adding hockey but I don't even wanna think about how much it would cost to rent a facility plus the headache/cost of having to bus at least an hour to/from practice every day

I think if this were to happen, Vermilion would have to still build some kind of a practice facility. Maybe something more low-key, like the Brookings dual-rink facility that their club teams play on. Even a cheaper rink has decent cost for keeping up the ice, I think. Would be a recreational amenity for the community and students, though. Maybe the city could chip in.

Hockey is wildly expensive. UND just recently CUT women's hockey - a team the regularly puts out Olympic players. I love the idea of hockey, but this would be a good way to drive USD sports into bankruptcy. Too many scholarships, no currently dedicated fan base necessary to act as a donor stream to fund those scholarships and it would undoubtedly be a Title IX nightmare for USD.
