Lady Yotes tomorrow are facing off against Stephen F Austin who is 6-1. They've only played 1 team (Kansas State) that is above 200 RPI and lost big. This is a return home on home match that the Coyotes won 80-74 at the SCSC last season. GO YOTES!!!

This game should be manageable. Looks like they have been opportunistic with forcing turnovers and drawing fouls against lesser teams. My guess is that they get a lot of transition and fast break points. That's probably also why they get to the line frequently.
Their perimeter shooting is suspect, and if they have to foul 20 times a game against lesser opponents, I think AA will be padding her free-throw stats in this game. If we take care of the ball, and force a few turnovers ourselves we will be fine.

I'm not sure why we are playing so bad this game. Any of the more seasoned Coyotes fans have a good idea why?
The one thing that I'm starting to notice is that we really struggle with what my high school coach in the 80s used to call "my turn" basketball. We don't move the ball as much as last year. Players like Bradley don't get open looks because we seem more selfish than last year and the ball never gets around to her. And players like Frederick, who is really tough one on one, has become a player that shoots whenever she gets it, even with a double team. Is this a coaching issue or a player issue?

SFA is very good. Their press really got our O out of sync and our D was very poor the first Q giving up 32 pts (only gave up 10 the 2nd so it got better). Ciera didn't play which didn't help. Our D positioning wasn't very good many times in the first half and SFA really came out fired up (probably partly since they lost last yr to us by 6 in the SCSC). Our passes seemed a second too slow often but their D was very aggressive and it was a very physical game. Good news is that there are those kinds of games once in a while but things are very correctable! The team never quit and worked very hard as always. Go Lady Yotes!!

I have been very complimentary of this team but after today I am becoming concerned. SFA may be good but the Coyotes are/should be at least as good as them and there is no excuse for the 20 point blowout loss today. I don't really feel like the Coyotes played very well in Cancun either. I thought the game against Indiana State they struggled for much of the game and obviously today the same.
There is just something a little puzzling right now and hopefully it will be fixed but the team needs to step it up now. There should be more depth on the team as well.

Obviously I severely underestimated SFA based on their schedule. I don't know what adjustments were made after the first quarter, but it was a closer game after that.
Before the season I predicted this game would be when this team would have a breakthrough and start playing really well. I guess they are still figuring some things out, especially on defense.
I wish I could have watched this game. They're going to have a nice home stretch of winnable games before the conference season starts. I'm confident they will get better. It's just a question of how high is their ceiling?
Right now the Jacks are the clear leader, and WIU 2nd. Not because of a preseason poll, but how they're playing.

Nobody but Trimboli and McKeever were ready to play.
SFA exposed USD's weaknesses, particularly without Duffy (you can't replace her ball handling, versatility and shooting at her size).
The uncomfortable fact that people are going to have to come to grips with is that Allison Arens can't be this team's best player if it's going to reach its potential.

Who should be their best player then? Does it matter who's best? Who do you think has the highest ceiling?

Your best player cannot have 30 turnovers to 10 assists unless they're Moses Malone or Shaq. There's a reason the ball is sticking.

I'm not really sure what highest ceiling means. Who's going to play the most pro ball? Who will end up being the best college player? Who's currently the most valuable all-around player? Who will be? Who is the best scorer?
But I will say that it seems pretty obvious to me that this team will be at its best with Duffy and Trimboli doing most of the decision making and Arens, Bradley and McKeever hunting shots off of them.
Arens just isn't a natural enough playmaker/ball handler to try to put her into the main creator role. Look at the team assist to turnover numbers from two years ago, to last year to this. Putting your head down and hoping a ref sends you to the line isn't a winning strategy forever.

Not quite the assist to turnover ratio a coach would wish for either I'm guessing. I think I've heard that a point guard should target a 2-1 ratio of assists to turnovers. Looks like #23 has 20-12 assists-turnovers on the year. That seems pretty good.

12 to 17 isn't good at all. I agree. I assume you're pointing out Duffy's assist:turnover ratio. From the few games I've watched though it seems like that's as much a product of her role change this year (she's being asked to play down low/post up a bit more opposed to last year where she was essentially the point guard).
As for McKeever, I also agree. She's been very good.

Why not have McKeever be starting at the point and let everything run through her. She is going to pass the ball before looking for her shot but I sure don't mind her looking for offense either. McKeever put up another pretty good line against SFA but I have to continue to wonder why Lamb is getting so many minutes. She has a low percentage, has not been getting many rebounds or assists either plus she had 5 turnovers against SFA. It is up to Dawn at this point to get this offense rolling and to be better on D as well. If players are playing selfish then they either need to be lectured or benched until they play the way they are supposed to play.
BTW the Jacks are tied with #4 Lousville at Frost after the 3rd quarter. The Coyotes barely even belonged on a same court as #12 Tennessee. It is time to step up because the team last year was playing as well as the team this year and this years team should be leaps and bounds ahead of last years team. The Jacks have Mya Selland playing well for them as a freshman and I think she was a mammoth loss when Amy Williams left. Was McKeever a Williams recruit, I believe she was and I really like her. So far is seems like Dawn's recruits are average at best at this point. I think USD and her sisters recruited Monica as much as anyone. She was probably a near slam dunk recruit. The others I am luke warm on.
