Coyote Football Alumni,
One week after signing date and things aren’t slowing down on campus. It was a busy but productive recruiting period as we added an additional 11 student/athletes to the 16 commitments we got during the early signing period in December.
The February signing group includes a heavy dose of defensive backs and offensive skill players that will add to our team speed and athleticism. Check out all the signees and their bios on the website.
We have filled all the vacancies on our coaching staff through promotions and new hires. On defense, “Moose” Mohnsen will expand his role as Assistant Head Coach to include Defensive Coordinator, Atiba Bradley will continue to coach the inside linebackers and Mark Watson will expand from corners coach to secondary coach. Al Sega who coached defensive tackles last year will become the defensive line coach and we are adding Rob Aurich as outside linebacker coach and Special Teams Coordinator. Coach Aurich comes to us from Bemidji State University where he served as Defensive Coordinator and linebacker coach as well as coordinating special teams. Aurich was an All-American linebacker at Minnesota Duluth and played on our two national championship teams in 2008 and 2010.
Ted Schlafke will continue his role as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach with Andy Prevost moving from tight ends coach to offensive line. Phil Ockinga will move to wide receivers coach and Recruiting Coordinator (roles he held for us at Western Illinois). New hires on the offensive side include Tyler Paopao as tight ends coach. Tyler comes from Eastern Oregon University, where he was the offensive coordinator, prior to his 5 years at EOU he coached tight ends and wide receivers at Southeast Louisiana. Before starting his coaching career, Tyler played briefly in the CFL as a quarterback and is the son of Joe Paopao, famous CFL coach and former CFL quarterback. Our final staff changes include the additions of two former Coyote players, Dante Warren as our offensive graduate assistant and running back coach and Jay Burns as our defensive graduate assistant. Coach Warren comes from Augustana where he had been coaching the running backs for the past two seasons and Coach Burns joins our staff from the high school ranks having coached in Florida and at Rockhurst high school in Kansas City.
Other big football news includes the Board of Regents full approval of the Dakota Dome renovation project. This project which includes renovation of the west side seating area, a new locker room and meeting spaces, renovated offices and outdoor practice areas is now officially underway. Selection of the architect and contractor will be done over the next month.
Spring practice is right around the corner as we officially start on March 17th. Our first practice will be held at the Sanford Fieldhouse in Sioux Falls at 7:00 pm and is open to alumni. Our spring schedule includes practice on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and on Saturdays. The Spring Game will be held Friday night April 20th and for the second year in a row will be televised live by MIDCO.
Our coaching staff will also be busy speaking at clinics this spring. We will be the featured staff at the Iowa Coaches Association Clinic on March 3rd and the featured staff at the Minnesota Coaches Association Clinic on April 5th. I will also be speaking at the South Dakota Coaches Clinic on March 23rd.
Thanks for all you do and Fight South Dakota,
Bob Nielson

I guess if I absolutely had to lose some of the assistants I would rather lose them on the defensive side which is the side of the ball that could use a little new blood with a few new wrinkles to get this unit playing at a higher level. The Coyotes will go as far as the defense takes them next year. There should not be a big player depth issue on that side next year and we need to improve at least a little bit there.

Losing starting MLB after game 3, both corners and a back up to sexual assault charges, safety with broken toe and starting DT will hurt any defense. We should field a very good defense next season

Good teams do not use injuries as excuses. Even if subconsciously they did hurt a lot your mind set can't be to use it as an excuse. The Coyotes need to be at least a little and probably much better on that side of the ball from beginning to end in 2018. I am not going to get into a huge debate about this but that is simply one opinion.

Just putting some of the defenses' late season struggles into perspective. Most of us expect nothing but improvement out of both sides of the ball as this staff continues to recruit well and build more depth, especially in the trenches and secondary.

Well said NCC. I think we saw serious improvement in the D from 16 to 17. But losing Wessel after game 4 hurt them then losing the DB’s made for some scheme changes, and then the loss of Schultz, Powell, and Coker before the SHSU game certainly played factors in their late season struggles.
The new red shirt rules being proposed where a guy can fill in for a few games before losing his eligibility for a year could have probably made an impact for our defense last season allowing them to try some freshman late season without penalty.
