Does that imply they flew Smith out there?

I totally would have gotten a move to Colorado State, but Utah State? No way. Third in line at best behind Utah and BYU. Seems like a lateral move, but if that what he wants, then go. There's some truth in what Quarrier said. I like Craig a lot both personally and professionally, but, if this rumor is to be believed, our players and program don't need to be going through this constantly. I completely agree with you. When Smith was rumored to the Colorado State job that is fine and I can understand that because of his past ties etc. I know Utah State is in the MWC but this seems like he wants out of Vermillion more so than simply wanting to further his career. At this point Smith seems no longer invested in USD and it would probably be better off at this point if he were to leave since that is what he wants. It is awfully difficult to ask your players to buy into a program or give full effort when you simply want to leave at the first decent opportunity. Don't expect loyalty from your players if you don't give loyalty in return. It looks like Smith will leave unfinished business in Vermillion.

Imo, it’s very silly to question Craig’s priorities and goals. He is an excellent basketball coach. Why wouldn’t he want to leave vermillion at some point? He would be foolish to pass up an opportunity like USU. of course I want him to coach the Yotes for multiple more seasons, but to say he’s leaving because of a lack of loyalty is BS. You have to move one while you can.

We just need to move on. Craig did more for our program in four years than I could have ever dreamed of and we have a lot to be thankful for. This is coming from a guy who originally thought we should have hired TJ. This is a reality of the mid major world. We are the lily pad. If we expect to have someone stay at USD forever then we might as well accept mediocrity. I want winners. As it was said before - If you lose, you get a new coach. If you win, you get a new coach. Usd is a very desirable program for our next coach.

Does Coach Smith take Mooney or any of the 2018 recruits with him, if he gets this one?

Actually it appears that a flight left Logan this morning and is arriving at 7:45am....returning to Logan at 8:30am.

Feel I need to weigh in here - I have no illusions that the University of South Dakota is not an "end" job. We are who we are - a small division one school.
But I also think that the student athletes deserve a coach who is committed to them and not always looking to leave. It has been apparent the last two years that Coach Smith was looking for any position which could get him out of Vermillion. We know about the ones in which he interviewed. Who knows which others he went after but was not seriously considered. And if that is the case, then it is probably better that he leave now.
Coach Smith has had modest success at USD, but at the end of the day did not get the Coyotes to where we all want them to be. No NCAA's, no deep runs in the other tournaments.....He is a really good coach who doesn't want to wait and build a program. He wants to take his modest success and turn it in to a bigger paycheck.
I hope the next coach (who we all know will leave when he has some success) comes to Vermillion without one foot already out the door. I hope they spends some time here, gets us to the NCAA's a couple of times, and then is approached and lands that big job in a Power 5. I am probably dreaming, but the student athlete at USD deserves at least that much.
Good luck at USU Coach Smith.

It's all speculation until Smith is announced elsewhere, save the well wishes for then. We've known since the Drake fiasco that he is seeking the next rung on the ladder but this could turn out the same way that did.

My only beef is next year is shaping up to be a very solid team that could be an NCAA team. Not finishing that is an issue for me because, remember, we tanked an entire season redshirting those players he brought in hopes for a payoff someday. We haven't got that payoff yet and it doesn't look like we will.
Whoever comes in next should not be allowed to tank a season the way that was done. As a matter of fact, that should be a huge red flag for us in the future as it is a sign of a coach building it up for a big run.

Does Coach Smith take Mooney or any of the 2018 recruits with him, if he gets this one? This is the only thing that would piss me off especially if Ben Fakira, the big Australian, were to be enticed to leave. I know Smith put in the time and effort, but it was USD money that was used for a specially approved trip to Australia to recruit him and get him signed. Hope I'm not wrong on this, but I'm not too worried about the others. I think USD will be a good fit and place for them.

That article was updated 11-13hrs ago. If the plane flew in this morning (and I would have no idea), he’s likely gone. They aren’t flying him back to let Herbster try and convince him to stay.
