It is worth noting players are signed to the school not coach. But USD did let RCJ out of her NLI when Amy left. Not sure if they would do it again with any red shirts or incoming guys.

That article was updated 11-13hrs ago. If the plane flew in this morning (and I would have no idea), he’s likely gone. They aren’t flying him back to let Herbster try and convince him to stay. It landed an hour ago and is headed back to Logan already. So they just dropped Smith off. Nonetheless, he's heading back to Verm now, I'm assuming he will probably call a team meeting as well. We will see.

My only beef is next year is shaping up to be a very solid team that could be an NCAA team. Not finishing that is an issue for me because, remember, we tanked an entire season redshirting those players he brought in hopes for a payoff someday. We haven't got that payoff yet and it doesn't look like we will. Whoever comes in next should not be allowed to tank a season the way that was done. As a matter of fact, that should be a huge red flag for us in the future as it is a sign of a coach building it up for a big run. There was an immediate payoff from sacrificing that season, the team won the Summit League the following season. Didn't exactly fall off a cliff afterwards either.

I don't know how much stock you put into hoopdirt.com but this was posted this morning...
"Utah State is reportedly closing in on South Dakota head coach Craig Smith. He has been the head coach at South Dakota Since 2014, and has worked for Tim Miles as an assistant at Nebraska, Colorado State, North Dakota State, and Mayville State (ND). Sounds like this could be wrapped up shortly."

I guess I assumed he was already in Utah and, therefore, was being dropped off. So I suppose you could definitely be right.

Yes, the flight schedule we saw from Sioux Falls to Utah suggests he is there right now. I have to think Smith is their #1 guy if they flew him out there this morning.

I don't know if we start the thread yet, or even talk about it. But I would say an early favorite to the coaching search would be Ryan Miller.

Imo, it’s very silly to question Craig’s priorities and goals. He is an excellent basketball coach. Why wouldn’t he want to leave vermillion at some point? He would be foolish to pass up an opportunity like USU. of course I want him to coach the Yotes for multiple more seasons, but to say he’s leaving because of a lack of loyalty is BS. You have to move one while you can. I can agree with what you are saying about opportunity etc. This statement isn't necessarily directed at you but we should also keep that same standard for players as well if they decide to leave for a better opportunity.

No worries CF. That’s actaully an excellent point and very fair.

Feel I need to weigh in here - I have no illusions that the University of South Dakota is not an "end" job. We are who we are - a small division one school. But I also think that the student athletes deserve a coach who is committed to them and not always looking to leave. It has been apparent the last two years that Coach Smith was looking for any position which could get him out of Vermillion. We know about the ones in which he interviewed. Who knows which others he went after but was not seriously considered. And if that is the case, then it is probably better that he leave now. Coach Smith has had modest success at USD, but at the end of the day did not get the Coyotes to where we all want them to be. No NCAA's, no deep runs in the other tournaments.....He is a really good coach who doesn't want to wait and build a program. He wants to take his modest success and turn it in to a bigger paycheck. I hope the next coach (who we all know will leave when he has some success) comes to Vermillion without one foot already out the door. I hope they spends some time here, gets us to the NCAA's a couple of times, and then is approached and lands that big job in a Power 5. I am probably dreaming, but the student athlete at USD deserves at least that much. Good luck at USU Coach Smith. Very well written post. I agree that USD isn't the be all end all but "come on" don't we all need a little higher opinion or expectation of USD. When we are having this conversation almost every year with one of our high profile coaches why do so many just discount USD as a po dunk job that every coach should want to leave. Where is the pride??? SDSU doesn't seem to have quite nearly this problem nor do other schools to the level this has been occurring at USD. Sure there is some risk that a coach will leave at this level. I cannot blame Amy Williams one bit for leaving for Nebraska. I don't think anyone can. But Bob Nielson to Kent State, Craig Smith to Drake or Utah State. Technically maybe these are a little bit better jobs on the rung of the ladder but are they so much better that a coach will want to uproot their families and start all over again. These are hardy dream jobs. In no way would I ever support a hire just because they would be more apt to stay long term. That is self defeating. But on the other hand can't we get someone that will at least be committed to staying for a little while to build something and see it through for at least a couple of cycles of players. Craig Smith started wanting out as soon as he had any success at all. USD has done everything they can to try to be competitive and to trend upward. Is Vermillion that bad that coaches just don't want to be there any more.

Does anyone know, or could hazard a guess, what the buy out would be for Smith's contract? Seeing as how it was just renegotiated a year ago for his benefit, I would hope our AD got some meaningful consideration in return.

The third we know of in two years. It is fair to talk about other coaches here too. He’s a good coach, but not as great as he thinks. Folks can point at the SLT, it is fair. I point at the CBI. I wouldn’t over pay for him to stay.

I guaranty the guy would bring in some of the best recruits that SD has seen. It might bring some frustration like SDSU experienced last year, but the upside may be worth it. It paid off for then this year.
