New York City -– The South Dakota track and field teams made it a three-peat at the Great West Conference Indoor Championships Monday as both Coyote teams won titles for the third straight year. The Coyote women recorded the victory with a score of 222 points, while the men won with 170.5 points.
South Dakota head coaches Lucky Huber and Dave Gottsleben each earned GWC Coach of the Year honors for the women and men, respectively, for the third consecutive year. Freshman Tansha Clarke (St. Catherine, Jamaica) was named the GWC Women’s Freshman of the Year while sophomore Bethany Buell (St. Louis, Mo.) received the award for the top women’s performance after a record-shattering effort in the pole vault.
The Coyote women’s team won eight events overall, including the distance medley relay captured on Sunday, while the Coyote men won three events. Both teams displayed the depth that has helped them win titles the previous two years.
Buell successfully defended her conference pole vault title with a meet record-breaking effort of 4.12 (13-6 1/4). She just missed the school record she had set earlier this season at the Iowa State Classic. The Coyotes paced 1-2-3-4 in the pole vault and scored 29 points, as senior Haley Peterson (Norfolk, Neb.) took second at 3.65 (11-11 3/4) , sophomore Megan Meyer (Bismarck, N.D.) took third at 3.40 (11-1 1/4) and sophomore Betsey Whisonant (Cody, Wyo.) fourth at 3.40 (11-1 1/4).
Clarke won the pentathlon with 3,216 points on her way to earning freshman of the year honors, while senior Crystal Schiernbeck (Ida Grove, Iowa) was second at 3,195. Clark had the best shot put throw in the pentathlon while Schiernbeck was first in the 60 hurdles and long jump.
Sophomore Alexa Duling (Gregory, S.D.) had an outstanding meet, scoring 26 points with two wins and a third-place finish. Duling won the 400-meter dash at 55.36, winning the event by one second, and added a win in the 200 dash at 24.80. She was third in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.93. Duling, who won an outdoor title in the 400 hurdles in 2010, now has three conference championships for her career.
Sophomore Gabriel Williams (Sioux City, Iowa) captured the 60-meter dash at 7.69, winning the event by .01 seconds. It is the first individual conference title of her career.
Freshman Morgana Running (Spearfish, S.D.) won the 800 run at 2:13.33, edging Houston Baptist’s Jessica Whitt for the win by .66 seconds. Sophomore Casey Shade (Hartford, S.D.) repeated as the men’s 800-meter run champion, prevailing with a time of 1:53.30.
Junior Kenna Wolter (Santa Maria, Calif.) captured the women's triple jump at 12.10 (39-8 1/2), winning that crown for the second straight year. Junior Cody Linder (Plattsmouth, Neb.) won the men's triple jump for the Coyote men at 14.41 (47-3 1/2), also repeating as champion.
Senior Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) won the shot put at 13.99 (45-10 3/4) for her first career conference championship.
Freshman Adam Mikkelsen (Gregory, S.D.) won the men’s high jump at 1.96 (6-4) with senior Jeff Sebern (Brookings, S.D.) taking second at 1.93 (6-4).
Also for the Coyote men, junior Jeremy Blount (Tampa, Fla.) was second in the 60-meter dash at 6.88, with sophomore Michael Burrus (Papillion, Neb.) taking third at 6.96.
Sophomore Carol Miller (Mead, Neb.) was second in the women's one-mile run at 5:03.53, while senior Sarah Wickman (Iowa City, Iowa) was second in the 3,000-meter run at 10:09.73. Freshman Megan Hilson (Yankton, S.D.) was third in the women's 5,000-meter run at 17:56.08.
The Coyotes, who will move into the Summit League next year, begin their outdoor season on March 18-19 at the Baldy Castillo Invite in Tempe, Ariz.
