What Southern Miss is really good at:
Ball Control 1.81 Asst/TO ---(#2) 17.9 Assists ----(#18) 9.9 Turnovers --(#7) 8.7 Steals ------(#25) +5.1 TO margin (#11)
Defense 39.1% FG Defense -(#35) 31.4% 3P Defense -(#89) 61.7 points allowed (#21)
Not fouling 14.9 Personal Fouls (#14)

What Southern Miss is bad at:
Drawing fouls/ Hitting FT 198 FT Attempts --(#249) 121 FT Made ------(#305) 61.1% FT shooting (#338)
From a statistical standpoint, ball control and defense are pretty important, and most of the other stats are average for S. Miss. I honestly wonder why we are favored, other than home court.
USD is only allowing 64.9 points/ game (#49), and only comitting 11.8 turnovers (#55). The rest of our stats are pretty bad, but I guess the scoreboard is the most important stat.

I love Lee's press conferences. The man just speaks the truth. You can see he is a good coach as the team is running good sets and is being put in good positions but we are just challenged offensively. Once we get some shooters I expect good results.

^agree. IMO, the way that lee changes his starting line ups tells me he is challenging his guys to step up to the plate. We just lack confidence offensively.

I have to disagree a bit. I understand that Lee is trying to install his system, but right now it looks like he is forcing a square peg into a round hole. He needs to adjust to play off any strengths the players have. The defense is fine, but the offense is brutal. And the kids don't even look like they enjoy playing.

Never looked at it that way.

No offense is going to function very well with poor shooting. Last night we were getting some wide open looks and just not knocking down the shots. Few players are shooting under 20% on three pointers for the season. I don't get the square peg analogy. Players are going to have to step up.

This game and the Baylor game, when it was crunch time the opposition went to zone. I think for two reasons, they were not confident they could cover man to man against our sets, and they were willing to take the chance on our outside shooting. Coach was right, the Yotes were getting good looks, they just couldn't hit the shots. So with our brutal shooting, coach says we need to get better on D.
I like that, Defense wins championships. If you're talking about playing better Defense, when it's clear that your offense just let you down, you know you have an understanding of what winning is about!
Just my opinion...

Wouldn't surprise me if the 'Yotes start seeing more and more zone as the season goes on.

This is kind of comical. Coach Lee can do no wrong even when we lose we love his press conferences. Lmao.

Did you expect them to be undefeated at this point? Their best player and about only consistent offensive player last year transferred to Texas tech. Second best player is out for the year. Simpson and Peterson have never shown any kind of consistent outside shot. Smith had umude waste a redshirt year for like 10 minutes of playing time last year. The list goes on. What I do think it's fair to make a judgement on at this point is Lee. The team is running good sets and have pretty consistently in most games but he can't make the shots for them. Lee said as much and I happen to agree with him. I think it's a positive he demands effort or he will play some one else. They are playing good D (arguably better than under prior staff) and has shown more flexibility as a coach than the prior staff in my opinion. I always like how guys know how they stand based on his openness. Laugh if you will but the season is about what I would expect without mooney and Hagedorn.

I was at the game. Long time Vermillion resident. First time at the new facility. I used to go to games at the New Armory and was a water boy when Jack Doyle coached. This is a top notch basketball arena. I think the coach deserves some credit for doing as well as he has. Pretty limited offensive team. No height. No great shooters. They are in every game. They are scrappy. I think the future looks pretty good with a little better talent. Go ‘Yotes!

I strongly question if we are really as good defensively as people think. To me, it seems like the main reason we are holding people to fewer points is because we are playing at a much slower pace this year. Teams are shooting 43.2% from the floor against us. That ranks 175th in the country out of 353 teams. Which means pretty much average. However, I still believe we will finish 2nd in the regular season. Majority of our guys are use to winning and I think that will be a very important factor throughout conference play. Did you expect them to be undefeated at this point?
