Unbelievable loss tonight to a 6-23 team! USD did not come ready to play. They played horribly on defense, continuously got beat to loose balls and I'm not sure of the final numbers but the it didn't seem as though they rebounded well at all against a similar sized team. The effort was lackluster and the unselfish sharing of the ball was non-existent most of the game. Understanding time and score once again contributed heavily to this loss.
UTPA had a great defensive scheme. They just chased The Yotes around all their weaves and switched on screens and dribble hand-offs to prevent them from getting open looks. Instead of the patience exhibited the last 3 games, The Yotes reverted back to quick jumpshots. Cutler attacked gaps all night (as witnessed by his 14-18 freethrow attempts) and Louie picked and chose his spots. Gruis and Andreotti got very limited touches. Westbrook took several toughly contested shots and Thomas struggled defensively all night.
With 5 minutes remaining and in the double bonus guys were still taking quick jumpers. Good teams take advantage of those situations. In the last 2 minutes of the game Westbrook, who looked very uncomfortable at the line, bricked 2 freethrows. Then inexplicably with 15.7 seconds left to play, with the game tied at 71 and both teams in the double bonus, Thomas just grabbed one of the UTPA players. The player hit the 2 freethrows to go up 73-71. Louie came down and hit a 3 pointer with 9.4 seconds remaining to go up 74-73. Then Brandon Provost for UTPA hit a driving layup off the glass with 2.6 seconds for the final score 75-74. Only Cutler and Krogman came to play tonight. The Yotes talk about being a good team, but in order to do that they must collectively give consistent effort, play unselfishly and intelligently. Those 3 things were missing tonight. It was just a very bad loss tonight!
