Thursday will complete the 2-day offset "doubleheader" at the SCSC between the Pioneers and the Coyotes. Here's the leadoff post from announcerbob about this game (put in the previous game thread):
Anyone should feel free to start game threads. Just because I usually do it, doesn't mean anything. That's mainly because I sometimes do some stat stuff prior to the game. (not always, I'm often lazy and inconsistent) It's not stepping on my toes by any means. I would encourage anyone to start threads for any reason. We need more participation on here.
I agree that 3-point defense will be important. Our staff needs to game-plan better than last time. I think there is now a good deal of Summit League film to digest, so we shouldn't be caught off-guard. Of course, they might have some new looks or schemes for us, since we have a target on our backs now.
In the WIU game Gravina hit us with an effective zone in the first quarter to keep us out of the paint. Luckily we were hitting 3's, which opened up the lane again. At that point our bigs just took over. Dawn also talked about "going small" on them at times, where Duffy played the 5. That created some mismatches that switched things up a bit. Nice use of a versatile roster, but it is interesting to me how coaching plays a prominent role in this league. WIU, ORU and Denver are all well-coached, and can make up for recruiting disadvantages vs. the SD schools with scheme.
Denver is both like and unlike WIU, I think. One thing they do that is really unique in my opinion is how quickly they can get the ball down-court in transition. They relay-pass (terminology?) very quickly, and jack up 3's before the opponent can get set. Sam Romanowski is a very good passer, as well. At the end of the day, if they are hitting arc shots at a high clip, they will be a tough out.
Denver comes into the game 2-3 in their last 5 - giving up the same number of points on defense as they are scoring. They are 2-4 on the road in conference play. Hanna S and TayFred will be a key in the game for their defense and staying out of foul trouble. 3 pt Defense will be vital as well. I believe the Lady Coyotes' defensive intensity and how they are playing on the offensive will provide the difference in this one. I plan to be there, who else will be joining me?
