We were supposed to take care of business against NW OK St., and we did. Congrats to the players, coaches and supporting fans for taking care of business. On to the Bison.
Just secured my tickets for the NDSU game. 6 p.m. kickoff. I plan on taking off from Sioux Falls bright and early Saturday morning.
NDSU is 2-1, but I get a sense from the box scores, message boards and media accounts that the Bison are far from firing on all cylinders. NDSU's most recent game against Morgan State was in question until the 4th quarter. I think many Bison fans expected NDSU to cruise.
While the Lakesbison of the world are still looking down their noses at the visiting Coyotes, I suspect the more reasonable NDSU fans are harboring significant concerns. I'm actually more excited for this game than I was for the Minnesota game.

This could be the toughest game on the schedule this year. NDSU is a team that expects to win every time they are on the field regardless of opponent. That Boise State ability to show up and kick ass (I think NDSU had it first.)
USD had that same attitude when they went to Minneapolis. If they bring that same attitude we will see one of the best games in years. Really do not think NDSU will take USD lightly. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Bison are not taking the Coyotes lightly.
I'm sure USD will spread out the Bison defense and let their QB make plays, like he did at Minn.
I watched that Minn game and the Bison defense is better than the Gopher's but our offense is a work in progress. RFR QB came in last night and moved the offense....we'll see how he does this week.
If we can keep your offense off the field by having ours sustain drives, the Bison should come out on top. But if your offense is on the field making plays it could be a long day for us.
I remember 86 when the Bison/Yotes played for the DII championship (senior in HS)......that was a fun game to watch!!
Good luck to the Yotes but I am expecting a Bison win.......yotes will be very confident coming up here. Should be a good game.

I will admit that pre season I expected the Bison game to be USD's worst played game of the year. USD just plays horribly north or the border. My feeling was that USD would keep the Minnesota game closer than the Bison game. Now that USD has beaten Minnesota they only have a couple of points to spare if they are to get a win if my notion ends up being true.
The Fargo Dome can create problems for Warren and the USD offense that they haven't faced and that is crowd noise that would prevent them from hearing the play count. The decible level will likely be higher than it was at Minnesota. The crowd can be the Bison's biggest advantage but the Bison players will not intimidate USD.
This is truley a matchup of the Bison Defense vs the Coyote offense. With that being said whichever team can play better when NDSU has the ball will likely decide the game.
USD will not be able to afford stupid penalties, bad turnovers or an otherwise lapse in energy. It's gonna take a complete effort. The good news is that USD has played their tails off so far this year. They have plenty of confidence and won't simply just go away if NDSU gets the lead. With that said the Bison are going to be in big trouble if they let USD play with the lead. The Bison offense doesn't seem to be an explosive up and down the field O.
Personally I think on a neutral field I will take the Yotes. This is a game that I have thought all along is a home field wins game.
This game could go either way and I believe that if USD plays to their potential and keeps the defense off the field they will win the game.
There are alot of intangibles that I just can't help but think will go the way of the Bison as they usually do in those types of environments. USD plays in a dome but for whatever reason they don't play well at all in road dome games.

So far I think all the posts here are spot on. The Bison can not look past USD and I have no idea why they would. You guys certainly got lots of attention meting the Gophers. Great Job! I'm thinking that if the Bison can get the offense going and our defense can contain your QB we should be in good shape. I'm not going to give any score predictions but I do think that this game will be a slugfest. Good Luck!

I can't agree with you more bosco and coyotefan. It should be a heck of a game. If the coyotes can get the running game going better, that should give them a very good shot. That is what killed them with Minnesota. They would have beaten them worse, but couldn't run the ball to pick up 1st downs. If they could have picked up a few 1st downs on the ground, they could have eaten up alot of clock instead of going three and out through the air a few times there.

The one thing I think Ed is very good at is preparing his team mentally for a big game. About the only time I know they comepletely laid an egg was last year at Northern Colorado. North Dakota wasn't pretty but that was all out ugly. Those games happen.
My bet is Ed has them completely ready to go. He knows war is coming, and the most physical team is going to win this game.
If you look at how the season has gone thus far it is interesting to look and analyize week to week. First was Central Florida where I think everyone under the sun thought there was no chance of winning. We moved the ball on the ground, played fairly error free football, but offensively we showed nothing, ate up clock, took our check and went home.
Obviously we all now know what happened at Minnesota. But it was the game at Central Florida that instilled in the kids minds they could play with average FBS teams on down through any FCS program in the country. They walked away from that game knowing they had a chance to be something special.
NW Okie State was a game scheduled so pefectly. It allowed us to get over our upset hangover at Minnesota and we did what we had to do to move on without losing face. That basically was a no win game, but we found a way to win without tarnishing what sparkle we had earned.
Now is NDSU. Tomorrow is Saturday. On Saturday, there is no tomorrow. In order to permenatly place USD amongst the FCS powers nationally, we have to go to Fargo and line up and go toe to toe with the Bison. They might not be among the elite this year but their storied tradition has entitled them the respect we must give them. Respect............not fear.
From the time they get off that bus they have to be looking for a fight. They might get knocked down first, but they must stand up and punch their way through it. It will be a war, make no mistake about it.
I have every bit of faith in Ed and this team. 60 minutes of old fashioned football. Damn I love this game.
GO COYOTES

I do have to disagree with a couple things, not specifically from the post above. I do think USD had a good running attack going against UCF. Ganious had 90 yards against UCF, which is a pretty good number against a FBS team.
Against Minnesota, the Gophers' defense CLEARLY wanted to stop the run in the game, thinking that's all USD would do and not really attack them through the air, showing that Cosgrove is still an idiot from his Nebraska days.
I do have to say though, the offensive line is a lot better at pass blocking then run blocking right now, which could be because they worked all of fall camp on stopping a pass rush for UCF, who has one of the best pass rushers in the country, and Minnesota. So they might be a step behind. I am sure Ed clearly saw that the team needs to improve at the run from the NW Okie game since that is his bread and butter.
Also with the game USD laid an egg on last year, it was clearly UND. Northern Colorado was a better team than UND, and USD played a lot better against UNC than UND, with the UND game being much more winnable, so that game is clearly the laid an egg game to me.
I don't think USD will lay an egg this weekend and will come out with some major intensity because they know it's for top billings in the Dakotas right now and USD would be the top team in FCS according to the rankings, which Ed can REALLY sell to the fans, players, recruits and donors.

The Yotes need to play with a chip on their shoulder this week. It would be nice to put the Bison in their place.

Putting the Bison "in their place" implies we are the superior program. Love the confidence, but it's the Coyotes that have much to prove, and a win in Fargo would be a huge step in the right direction. How's that for a diplomatic approach?

#1CF,
I will also counter a bit. I think the UNC game was more winnable. UND cares more about their football than UNC and getting a win from the Alerus is tougher IMO than winning in Greeley. I also don't think UNC was any better than UND. They may have been similar but I wouldn't give UNC any real advantage there. I expected USD to not play that well in Grand Forks. I think in Greeley I expected better. I think this is like arguing apples to apples because USD didn't play well in either game and didn't deserve to win either game. I was personally more frustrated after the UNC game.

I was more frustrated with the UND game after seeing USF beat UND in Grand Forks too weeks later. I thought UND was a really bad team last year with no heart and USF proved that for me.

Bison get the Gophers next year. Brewster will most likely be gone and it will be a good time to play them. New staff and probably a new system will make it a game that the Bison could win.

UND played with a lot of heart when USD was there last year. Watched it on TV. It was their homecoming game, a rivalry, and they came ready to play. When they played USF it looked like a listless team that just wanted the game over because they had someplace better to be. It was bad, real bad.
Still, USD could have made abetter showing and should have won that game. We've had a better team for years just haven't won it on the field. Some sort of mental block.

I was most disappointed after the UND game - flat performance. I thought we looked even worse against UNC though.
One of the things though that really gets me excited this year is our defense's pursuit to the ball and solid tackling. Potter is a stud. Offensively our guys are holding their blocks well, cutting and getting defenders on the ground. Much more physical this year than last. Think it was the tough first two opponents that required our guys to crank it up a few notches?
