Year two of the new rule where players can play in up to 4 games and still redshirt. Here is what we have so far for true freshman participation:
Cori Fant - Montana, OU, HBU, UNC Stephen Hillis - Montana, OU, HBU, UNC Jontrell Oliver - OU
For reference, we had 7 true freshmen who had played at this time last year. 3 redshirted, 3 are sophomores now, and the long snapper transferred. This feels like progress towards a more senior product on the field, but we still have two true freshmen getting very significant playing time.

On this topic, here is an article I saw a couple weeks ago: www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/27694260/uh-holgorsen-quit-19-redshirtsSenior QB and WR decide after a 1-3 start that they are going to sit out the rest of the season and get a redshirt. What are the odds they actually come back to that team? Or does the coach realize the team is going nowhere and wants to save these guys for next year?

Holgorsen wants to save them for next year because there was a bunch of transfers that came in when he took over as coach last year that will be eligible next year too. Cougs are tanking this year to set up for next year.

I watched College Gameday last Saturday and the crew spoke about the Houston redshirt situation. If the 2 seniors stick it out and Houston has a great 2020, it looks brilliant. If they leave via the transfer portal, well, not so much.
I have been keeping an eye on the teams that have played Oklahoma so far, in particular the passing performance of opposing team's QBs. Houston QB D'Eriq King, who is mentioned in your article was 14/27 passing for 167 yards and 2 TD against Oklahoma. UCLA QB Dorian Thompson Robinson was 15/26 passing for 201 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs against the Sooners. Texas Tech's QB Jett Duffey was 11/20 for 120 yards and 0 TDs and INTs against Oklahoma. USD's QB Austin Simmons was 25-34 for 244 yards and 2 TDs and 2 INTs.
What does it mean? Who knows? But I think perhaps it means our O-line, receivers, blocking running backs buying the passing time and Austin have a lot of potential and a chance to make a run in the Valley. We shall see... As has been posted already, need to take it one game at a time, because Indiana State will be giving us their best shot.

You have to feel bad for the other seniors on Houston. It has too feel like quitting in their eyes. On the flip side, it's really fun to think about King transferring to an OU or Oregon. He is a blast to watch.

Had Houston Baptist gone the way we thought preseason, my guess is more guys would’ve played in that one to get a taste of the action.

Houston QB D'Eriq King has already publicly said that he 100% intends to remain at Houston and will not be entering the transfer portal, though his dad has said something differently.
Imagine the bidding war for this kid if he did enter the transfer portal if marketing his "image and likeness" were legal in the NCAA. That's why this getting paid for "image and likeness" is a bad thing. The abuse will be astronomical and, couple it with the transfer portal, becomes an open market of buying players on an annual basis. Have a great first 4 games of the season, see your marketing potential increase, sit out the rest of the season and enter the transfer portal. Let the bidding begin. And this is not my original thought, David Pollack brought it up on CFB Live yesterday.
If I want professional football I can watch the NFL.

Limit the 4 game rule to true freshman and injured players, this could help.

That the NCAA decided to only apply this rule to football screams marketing, perhaps in response to the rise of prominent grad transfers. They must want more of that.
