This may belong in the Depth thread, but that has become a venting thread... I do not care what is or isn't going on at practice, #43 Brady Booker needs to get playing time. He may have been the only player I saw yesterday who was jumping around, pumping up teammates, bringing energy and enthusiasm, and seemed to really care even after the outcome was clear. Maybe he isn't quite as fast as other LB's or makes mistakes, etc., but assuming he is eligible, get him a little PT. You can build programs around that kind of mindset/culture. (Gibbs may fall in this category also...)

How quickly things change!! Now it’s head hunting time again. The issues where tackling in space and how we fronted up against the SIU big personnel formations with a running QB. Had no chance of defending them with skinny DB type players playing against those big bodied guys. Like throwing darts at a concrete wall. Need to match personnel better to have a chance against teams like that (NDSU by the way). I’d like to see concept based passing game instead of RPO and token play-action protections on passing downs. Makes it hard for QB to pass because the pass protection doesn’t fit for line stunts and blitzes on definite passing downs. Other than that, our offense can move the ball against anyone

Had a few beers in the tailgate area before the game. My biggest regret was that I didn't have a few more.

Our players' performance Saturday was a representation of our entire program in a nutshell. Zero student body presence(presumably partying in Brookings), weak tailgating area compared to previous home games this season, hell my '05 team was being recognized and I think there was maybe 10 of us in attendance, that was more embarrassing than the players' performance to me. Our whole program reeks of apathy, from fans all the way down to the players.
That being said, as a player, it has to mean more to you than anybody else. I don't see that with this group right now. You have to give fans a reason to show up and cheer. Show some fight, give them hope. Offense just keeps giving the ball away. Defense can't stop a nose bleed. It means a lot to some (Greenfield, Whitcomb, Cochrane/ Vander Esch, Case) but not enough from the naked eye. It's hard to follow a Sr. QB that continuously makes bone headed decisions, even when he makes a lot of great plays as well.
Heard Scott Frost summarize Nebraska's situation and it fits well with us too. "We have a lot of guys that love being football players, but not a lot of guys who love playing football."

I agree with you 100% nccoyote. A culture change needs to happen. I cannot understand or accept why USD students rather go to our rivals football game than stay and support their own team. They rather be where ”Gameday” is that support their own??? I will never understand that and nobody can convince that this is the norm. If your own fans and peers don’t think it’s important to show up and support you then it’s obvious why the players have no fire. Yes, it is the fans job to help the team get fired up. Players do need to pull from within but we all know the term home field advantage exist at every level for a reason. A culture change needs to occur as well as the football operational changes.

Time to hit up Coach Nielson with the hard questions tonight... unfortunately, those questions all get censored out...
I am excited to hear from Case and Collins though.

nccyote wrote students were "presumably" in Brookings and sportschic expressed upset at students attending the game in Brookings. I don't think there's any proof of a significant number of USD students going to Brookings. I watched GameDay trying to see what local flags were flying and whether one could see students or fans of other SD schools. I didn't say any indication of a USD presence. I saw a few in the GameDay crows wearing Augustana and USF gear. Many schools seem to be having trouble with student attendance at games.

1-3 home record this year doesn't do much to generate excitement among the fan base. Winning matters.

It all starts at the top and, unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's going to any change there for a few years. I guess we'll just have to settle for mediocrity for now. Team was unprepared and unmotivated against SIU and with what was at stake, how can that even be remotely acceptable? With the way they defensed it, the 'Yotes looked like they weren't even aware that the Salukis ran a wildcat. The worst thing is the apathy that is developing. I see too many hardcore fans leaving at halftime or deciding to not even come to the game because they figure it's not worth the time and effort. I'll continue to go and support financially, but I used to be excited for game days, but anymore I'm just "meh" and I'm not alone in feeling this way. While all our other programs are either flourishing or competing, the football team is not making progress and is backsliding if anything. Everything has been put in place: state of the art weight room and training facilities, major upgrades to the dome, head coach and assistants salary upgrades, cost of attendance for the athletes, so exactly where does the problem lie? Teams that don't have this are above us or passing us by. I'm also of the mind that there has been a talent upgrade over the past few years, but it obviously is not being coached up or developed. No excuses anymore. If this ends up being another losing season something has got to be done. I've heard all the excuses, thought I was patient, but I just don't see even the slightest bit of improvement. I'm tired of it. End rant.

I have to believe that the coaching staff is flustered and nervous (as they should be) as well and also wondering how much longer they will have a job. Coach Nielson, since he isn't going anywhere, needs to make some changes. I am hoping that his decades of experience will allow him to identify where those changes need to be made and make the right ones. There is football athletic ability on this campus of the likes which I have never seen before... however, they seem to be without leadership, discipline, and focus. Much of that comes from the coaches.
My kids brought friends along to the game on Saturday that were not committed to supporting any college football teams. I was thinking today would be the day we bring three new Coyote fans into family... While they did all say they had a good time, it's hard to imagine they will want to become fans after Saturday. My oldest boy said to me during the game, "Dad, this is embarrassing. I've been bragging to these guys how much fun Coyote games are and then we lose like this?" I didn't know what to tell him...

Everyone is frustrated right now as evidenced by these posts and rightfully so. So is Bob and the players. If you haven't watched the post game presser watch it now.
So we have friends that are down--other fans, players and coaches. We can walk away or we can support this team even more and yes intensity, passion, execution, leadership need to improve!!
I attended USD in 1967, sat in the cold at Inman Field and in the "new armory" cheering the Coyotes on and have continued to do so since. Watched a lot of great USD athletes and teams. They played with great intensity and passion--there are those words again.
I'm SO PROUD to be a UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA alum and always will be!! Every former, current and future Coyote student and athlete can count on my support!!! GO YOTES!!!
