Just an unbelievably terrific and well deserved honor for Duffy. Even given this state's lack of population, South Dakota sure seems to turn out some fantastic female basketball players from towns of all sizes. On a side note, with WIU's fiscal instability, I'm really surprised that Gravina hasn't moved up the coaching food chain yet. Being a very good coach and seemingly very personable would seem to be a winning combination.

Coach P continues to shine on the national stage. Some familiar names with her, but most notable was the absence of the coach from the school up north...

yes, i am a jackrabbit fan. however, how coach P gets a mention and SDSU's AJ doesn't is pretty surprising. Perennial Summit powerhouse, recently made it to the sweet sixteen. SDSU kinda paved the way for USD to be where they are.

SDSU kinda paved the way for USD to be where they are. An entirely rationale and fair point. I wonder how much of these lists are “political” in the sense that agents influence selections and a “who you know” kind of thing, and AJ gets snubbed because he isn’t perceived as someone looking to climb the ladder per se??? 🤷♂️

I would have to agree with Easmus in that Dawn is most definetly on an upward plane in the coaching realm and with AJ taking then not taking some jobs in the past it would seem he is simply happy playing in the Summit.

Let me just make sure my comments aren’t misconstrued as AJ being content or anything like that. I believe it has been said his wife is a professor at SDSU with a very good salary comparable to his. With 2 very healthy salaries for SD, the state’s retirement system being excellent, the support of WBB at SDSU, the Summit League, & SLT in their back yard, it is hard to blame him if he wants to stay.

SDSU kinda paved the way for USD to be where they are. I’m not sure what you mean when you say that Coach AJ paved the way for her? Until USD hired Amy Williams, I will say AJ owned the league. Since 2014, SDSU has won 1 regular season title. They’ve won the Summit League tourney more but I’ve always said the best team prevails during the regular season, and the hottest team during the tourney. I don’t think there is a huge gap between the two but it would be hard to argue that USD hasn’t been the power the last 6-7 years. Two times they have run the table and gone undefeated. I know your fan base loves AJ, as they should. But I know our fan base wouldn’t make a trade. Taking nothing away from AJ and his accomplishments, I just don’t get how he “paved the way” for Coach P. Coach P was handed a pretty good team when she came and has made them better. Plus they are awesome young ladies as I Hope SDSU has. It reflects well on our state when you win with class.

I don't get the "SDSU paved the way for USD" argument either. If that was the case than SDSU owes quite a bit to UND and NDSU since they were the standard of women's basketball for the 1990's before the Jacks became real good. I guess USD football also paved the way for the Jacks back in the 80's when they were good and went to the national title game. Since USD was established first I guess the Coyotes paved the way for the Jacks in everything.

One of the biggest reasons that USD is good in Women's Basketball and Volleyball is because the upper midwest is a power in Women's athletics, more specifically basketball and volleyball. The players to choose from are good in this part of the nation.

The Lady Yotes were just voted the smartest women's BB team in D1 by the WBCA (Women's BB Coaches Association) with a team average GPA of 3.793!! So not only are they very talented athletes but also great in the classroom which obviously helps them on the court and with their lives after sports!! Goes to show that Yogi Berra's famous quote is right that (paraphrasing) for successful teams..."Baseball (sports) is 90% mental and the other half is physical."

the coyotes intelligence isnt just in the classroom but also translates to the court. i have always thought their basketball IQ was very high. the yotes are talented no doubt but they give up an athletic advatage to many of the top 25 teams they beat.
