We now have 8 years in the MVFC. 4 years with Coach Glenn and 4 years with Coach Nielson. IMO looking at the results in conference give us the best metric for comparing and evaluating the program in terms of progress. I just wanted to present some of the data without editorial and see what jumps out at everyone.
Wins/Losses Overall 20/44 .30 win percentage Glenn 6/26 .1875 win percentage Nielson 14/18 .4375 win percentage
Conference Records 2017 & 2019 (4-4)

The records portray a general upward trend. The team has improved over time and as yesterday showed we have the talent to be an upper tier MVFC team.
Our offense has improved and defense declined. I think it's worth noting that some of that is the different style of offense we run under Bob, but I would agree with that general idea that the strengths of our teams have lied more on the offensive side of the ball.
Numbers don't lie, but don't tell the whole story either. I'm talking expectations and consistency. I think we've hammered that pretty well already though.

I agree the overall trend is positive especially dramatic on O! Obviously it is never fast enough for us fans, but I think it is hard to overstate how tough the MVFC is and then this year throw in an Oklahoma and playoff bound Montana too. I think we all agree that D needs more upgrades especially IMHO more run stoppers, consistent QB pressures and speed. If average points given up could be a max of 20/game and not much drop off in offensive pts/game that could result in a few more Ws. Obviously easier to say than to do given the competition.

Thank you for pulling the information together. The most interesting number to me is the improvement in scoring defense from a year ago (8 point improvement). It is nowhere close to where it needs to be, but making improvement nonetheless. Back in the day, we used to have team goals of scoring at least 24 each week and holding the opponent to 12. With the higher scoring game today, I'm sure that you would need to add 5 to 6 points to each of those numbers. Another measurement we had was the number of big plays given up as defined as 10+ yard runs and 20+ yard passes. My gut tells me that we didn't do well in that area this year, but you never know until you see the numbers. I'd be interested to know what the internal metrics are that Coach Nielson uses to evaluate his assistant coaches.
Data analytics are huge in sports these days. Curious if they work with the B School at all in compiling and analyzing the data. If not, they certainly should be doing so. They could also utilize live data during games to make informed decisions on probability of success given a certain set of variables. That would be a fun project for a Data Analytics student.
