Yes, there was a disappointing loss to Houston Baptist in the GWC tournament, but the USD women made huge strides in their 20-12 season.
Head coach Ryun Williams really motivated this team to play great defense. USD held opponents to 35 percent shooting, which is amazing, and 56 points per game. You have a chance to win EVERY game if you hold opponents to those two totals. Everyone on the team played defense and could also score. Plus there was only one senior - Teresa Case, so there is a LOT coming back next year, so there is a LOT to hope for.
Like I said, there are a lot of people who can score, but Amber Hegge was the only one who averaged over double-doubles at 17 points per game and she also grabbed 8 rebounds a game, 87 assists and 32 steals. Hegge found that go-to player mentality and she is so tough to guard with her first step and her toughness. She has really developed into that player everyone saw in her freshman year and at Crofton.
There wasn't another double-digit scorer, but it seemed like so many players stepped up to be a consistent option on a game-to-game basis.
Annie Roche has developed into a pretty good shooting guard who can pass and nail the three. She plays good defense and is just a spark plug. She is an invaluable member to the team and I think number 2 behind Hegge.
Jodie Boss is a rebounding presence down low, a major shot blocker since she is the single season blocks leader with 106, and barring injury, she should easily be able to become the career blocks leader next year in just two years with the team.
Alexis Yackley is a defensive presence who can hit 2 or 3 threes a game, which is all she needs to go. Guess I was expecting more offense, but she is a great passer and get hit the three. It will be great to have her running the point for the next couple of years.
Stacia Robertson is a player to watch for the future. 8 ppg and 4.7 rpg and 25 blocks. She played in all 32 games and started in 2 of them. She was forced to play a bit more because of the needs for forwards, but still allowed to develop with Boss there. I think she has a BRIGHT future.
Tempsett Wilson is one of the do-everything players and I am glad she is back next year. She can score, rebound, play defense and do all the little things. She was a great get. I think without her, there is no Westbrook, and without Westbrook, she isn't here. (Since they are dating).
Katelyn Edwards came of the bench and hit some big three's at the end of the year. Looking forward to see how she develops too.
The offense does have to develop more, but with the defense USD plays, they can give a lot of teams in the Summit League fits and can be in a lot of games and win more than a few games in the Summit I believe. There is no doubt that Ryun Williams was the right man for the job.
