A rundown of today's games in the NCAA hockey tourney.
#1 overall seed Yale beats Air Force in OT. Good game. Was pulling for AFA since one of my former teammates played at the Academy (well, quite a few years ago) but it was not meant to be. Good showing by the Flyboys but just couldn't pull it out in the end.
Up next for Yale is UM-Duluth on Saturday. UMD advanced by beating Union College (NY) 2-0. After watching these two games I have to put my $ on UMD from the WCHA. I just think they are faster and more skilled.
The #3 overall seed Tigers of Colorado College dismantled defending champion Boston College 8-4. BC came out early and scored within the first 20 seconds of the game but CC stormed back and took control of the game. This one shocked the college hockey world by how decisive this victory was for CC. CC advances to play Michigan.
Michigan advanced by beating the UNO Mavericks 3-2 in OT on a very controversial goal in OT. It took reply officials 9 minutes to determine that the puck crossed the line and was indeed a goal. I still have my doubts. By looking at the replay I believe it was a goal, however, you need clear video evidence, and watching the replay, I'm not so sure it was there, and the commentators, pundits, and many of those following the tournament, especially Mavs fans, do not agree there was conclusive video evidence. Of course the Wolverines and their fans are thrilled with the ruling and advance to take on CC. The CC v Michigan matchup has the makings for a good one. I won't venture to guess who will win but I will say it will be an exciting game to watch tomorrow.
The rest of the first round games will be played Saturday with the winners to meet on Sunday. Merrimack will take on Notre Dame at 6:30 PM with the winner playing the winner of the game between #4 seed Miami (OH) and New Hampshire (3PM). Denver will play Western Michigan (4PM) with the victor to meet the winner of the matchup between the overall #2 seed UND Fighting Sioux and Rensselaer.
The UND game will be on MidcoNet at 12:30 tomorrow, all other games can be found on ESPN U. UND might be the #2 overall seed , though I don't know why. UND is the best team in college hockey this year and I fully expect them to advance to the Frozen Four at the X in St. Paul.
I know many of you are tuned into the NCAA basketball tourney but this is some exciting hockey to watch if you are looking for something while the basketball games aren't on or just flipping channels. Although, I would say it should be your primary channel and you can flip to the basketball game during commercial.
