The Yotes will play their first game of the season when they take on Wichita State on Friday (Jan 22nd) at 2pm. The Shockers were picked fourth pre-season in their half of the conference. Wichita is coming off a 9-19 season. One common opponent from 2019 was Oral Roberts. Oral Roberts came out on top in Tulsa 3-2. The Shockers appear to be a balance attacking team as they have multiple players with a good number of kills. Wichita does return their top 4 offensive threats from last year. They appear to have some good height on the team so the Yotes will need to be sharp on their passing game. I did note that on the pre-season all conference list that the Shockers did not have any players listed. I am not sure what to make of that. As this will be the 1st real game of the season for both squads it will be a good test for both teams. I will be a bit of a homer here and pick the Yotes in this one! Thoughts!!!

We have a lot of known commodities on this team. Will be interesting to see how Bollweg and Weideman anchor the back row defense, or if any newcomers get a lot of playing time at L or DS, like Petterson or Diederich. I'll guess that Jurgens and Juhnke also contribute some digs. Juhnke is our main 6-rotation player. Diederich might attempt to fill a similar role, since she is listed as an OH?

I'm hoping we start the season 2-0. We are likely favored in both matches. If we stumble a little to start the season, I've got a lot of confidence in Leanne and the program to make adjustments and bring new players up to speed quickly. That's what they did two seasons ago with a lot of turnover.

Backrow spots and right side hitter will need to be filled with some new players this year. Of the freshman I am most excited to see what Diederich brings to the court. I have watched a fair amount of videos of hers from High School and she brings a great deal of energy and fire to the floor. Although she is not real tall she has a huge vertical jump. I trust the coaching staff to find the best fit for the rotation.

I figured since no one posted the update that the Coyotes probably lost this one and sure enough they got swept by Wichita State. Not a good start.

I wasn't able to listen to the match. Looking at stats, having your three players with the most digs being two OH and your setter is probably not ideal. Also a hitting % of 0.153 is poor. Looks like we are needing to adjust to the new players and new roles.
Well, this is why having more non-con matches is better than less. I'm glad Williams was able to score 4 competitive matches. We will be better for it.
On the bright side, we had 8 aces to WSU's 1. We also out-blocked them by 1.

Individually, Maddie Weidenfeld was perfect on offense. 9 kills, 0 errors on 16 attempts for a hitting% of 0.563!
Adams was targeted 20 times (3rd most on the team), but only produced 2 kills and 3 errors (plus a blocking error). She did tie for most digs at 12, though.
Slaughter and Juhnke led in kills, but were not efficient, with 6 and 5 errors, respectively.
Jurgens, Bollweg and Freshman Mattie Johnson each had 2 aces!
Jurgens had 27 assists, 2 setting errors. I think that's good?
