Yeah, to try and compare Mooney and Daum, and imply that it is all about the comparison of "culture" or "fit" at the two programs is quite the stretch. A ton of factors go into those personal decisions, and most people that aren't close to those players wont know all the reasons.
Mooney and Daum (and Konchar) all had opportunities to play in Europe AND in the NBA G-league. Daum decided to play in Europe, the other two went the G-league route. Mooney said at the time that he could have made more money in Europe, but he felt he had the best chance of getting called up to the NBA from the G-league. Just like when he transferred to Tech, it looks like he was rewarded for his decision hard work and sacrifices (based on his goals). He realized his dream of playing in the NBA, even if it was only for a brief time.
As for Daum, I don't know what his personal or professional goals were, but I'm guessing he made some money, and had some major life experiences traveling and living in Europe. Maybe that stuff meant more to him than a brief stint in the NBA. Nothing wrong with that. I'm not trying to cast him as lazy or greedy or anything like that. He just is a different person than Mooney. A different person that made different choices. It's not that SDSU has some kind of magical basketball culture that is so different than USD. They lose players to the portal, too.
As a fan, you can either be butthurt every single time a player or coach chooses to leave your school or not. Unless there is some kind of mass exodus, I don't see every transfer as an indictment of the program, culture or coaching staff. Its just how college basketball is right now. For better or worse.
