You do realize that ISU is ahead of Iowa in men's basketball right. You know how sad that is considering ISU's program? It's a fact.
I compare it because, clearly as a Hawkeye fan you are blinded by this, the Hawks get most of the attention in Iowa and have the larger fan base, similar to SDSU in South Dakota. USD is catching up, but still considered second fiddle to SDSU, sort of like Iowa State to Iowa.
Granted, you are a Hawks fan, so that does explain your blind eye.
The reason I am a Cyclone fan is because Hawks fans are UNBEARABLE. Seriously, you guys are. It's sickening. You are just below BCS supporters and ND supporters.

Cap'n, is winning enough? Look at the squeeze the Iowa BOR is putting on athletics at UNI. They were talking about scrapping the football program. You guys are perennially a top program in FCS and yet even you have budget issues. I read that starting in 2013 UNI will play 2 payday games against FBS'ers a year. That will not help in attaining an at-large bid. You'll pretty much need to win the conference most years to get in. I understand your situation is different having two in-state BCS schools, but Iowa also has a larger population. Oh, and beat the SuckClowns this week. Well, a couple guys above addressed the FBS game issue. And, to talk further, UNI welcoems all comers. We go into all of those games thinking we can win because we expect towin. Regarding budgets, because UNI wins and continues to win, our Panther Scholarshi[p Club meets their goal every year. If we are going to be weaned off those state funds, so be it. We just gotta do the work to meet the numbers. Oh, and we've won 14 or 15 of the 25 Gateway/Valley titles, so no worries there.

At Iowa basketball doesn't matter, sadly. Wrestling is tops in the country and is good filler between football seasons. UNI does have the best hoops program in Iowa, for now. I think Fran is going to change that and Iowa will be back on top in that too.
You do realize, thyough, football is king. How else does Kansas, with their crown jewel basketball program, come within an eyelash of being relegated to a mid-major conference.

I do realize football is king yes, and that's the only argument Iowa fans come back with about the basketball program. Pretty sad if you ask me. It's like a Duke fan talking about basketball season.

I listened to Ed's comments last night at Coaches Corner and they were pointed, but not out of line. Best of all, they were all true. The attendance there was once again back down to the 50-60 usual suspects and around 15-20 newbies. Why is that? A win this weekend at NDSU means USD likely cracks the FCS top 10 and puts itself in great position for future recruting battles with NDSU. That is a huge deal. An earlier poster errantly spouted their fingers off and said they thought it was a joke that USD went D-1. I will return the favor noting I think it's a joke how superior Bison fans truly think they are as a University. Yeah, your sports records are good, but you go to college to get an education first and play sports second. (that was not meant to invite positing NDSU mug shots etc...) Can you imagine Coaches Corner next Monday night after beating the Bison and preparing for UND? Do your part guys. Get your ass to a game and bring some friends. I took two buddies who had never been to a USD game to the NWOK State contest on Saturday and they had a blast. We hit Carey's, then tailgated, went to the game and these guys even bought USD t-shirts. The Howling Pack continues to grow, but it can be much better. Bring friends to Coaches Corner, to Lunch with the U in Sioux Falls, to games, and get season tickets. Be an advocate of USD everywhere else. Sure, I wear my USD gear everywhere and talk about athletics, but I also talk about the area where we have lately FLAT OUT OWNED NDSU, SDSU, UND, UNI, S. ILLINOIS, etc...in the classroom.
Whether it be Truman, Goldwater, Fulbright, or whatever the scholarly distinction, USD is on par with the Ivy League, Big 10 and Big 12 when it comes to our B-School as well as the number of scholarships and fellowships our graduates have received in the last 5 years across all facets of the education spectrum.
Our "peer" dakota schools can't say that. That isn't bragging gang, that is a fact. Be proud of that and SPREAD THE RED. According to this publication, UND and NDSU are ranked as Tier 1 institutions, whereas USD is listed as a Tier 2 institution. I would take an independent source like this over Argus to get rankings. So, while I'm not disputing that USD may be a good school, saying that they are far and away above other Dakota schools and flat out owned them is not FACT as you say - it is someone's opinion. colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-universities-rankings/state+ND+SD/title+dakotaThat said, good luck against the Bison this weekend. Come out with a W and then get ready for the other Dakota school north of your border

Hambone, Those are the rankings for just this year, USD has been ranked ahead of NDSU and UND before too and it will again. Just as FCS polls are beauty contests so are the rankings and tiering systems employed by these publications. And, just like in sports, it is results that matter, not polls.
I used to your link to come up with the following taken right out of the info section about USD to illustrate the point made in my previous post: "Thirty-nine U students have been awarded prestigious Fulbright, Rhodes, National Science Foundation, Boren, Truman, Udall, Jack Kent Cooke and Goldwater scholarships and grants for graduate study."
Come up with the stats for the other schools I mentioned and get back to me. =)

I don't think winning necessarily always equats to more attendance. Just look at the Sioux Falls Pheasants Baseball club. They probably had their best year in franchise history and people didn't show up. Some said it was because of the nickname switching.
Look at USD mens basketball. They have been about as consistant of a winner as can be hoped for. If anything the basketball attendance has declined since the 90's. The decline may have even start before the end of the NCC days.

It is great to see increased activity on the message board. However, what is really needed is $$. Therefore every USD fan (and fans of the Jacks, Bison and others are also welcome) on this board needs to do the following: 1) Join the Howling Pack - see this link for info www.howlingpack.com/2) Make it to as many games as possible and bring a car, van. Suburban, bus load with you. 3) Encourage all USD alumni to do the same.

Does USD have an athletic fundraising entity like NDSU's Teammakers??
I think the Teammakers raised almost 2 million dollars for athletic schollies last year.

Agree with Ed's point. But, USD has never done a good job of organizing on the out of town games to motivate the fans. They are still NAIA on that score. Trouble is that few grew up in the culture where their folks or friends spent the time and bucks following their team, even if they could afford to, so we have people organizing events, who have no idea what really motivates support. This is the type of assignment where you have to dig thru a hundred resumes and backgrounds to get the right person in the job, a creative sports afficionado, who has keen attention to detail and timing. But, what a difference it can make.

Wht USD is going through right now is a culture change. You're barely out of DII and you need to realize this is a loooong process - perhaps seven to 10 years. You can't get impatient or you'll be driven mad like those monkeys at Bisonville. Do the things goyotes is talking about, remain calm and patient and it will come. The Coyotes have a lot of people cheering for them in the FCS world, including me.
