This Coyote team is really good at a lot of things, specifically our attacking, blocking, and serving (much improved). But I thought I'd focus a little on what is holding us back: Passing and Serve-receive.
Basically a Dig is a successful pass (usually to the setter, but could be to another, or even over the net) after an attack attempt by the other team. The dig is the first contact.
A "reception" is the first contact after a serve. So you don't call it a dig, but both of them are still "passing".
Both types of passes have specific errors associated with them (Passing Error and Receiving Error), but instead of looking at that, I thought I'd look at a couple of stats that are more common: "Digs per set" and "opponent Aces per set" There is probably a better combo stat to look at, like a ratio of some kind, but this will do for now.
Right now the Yotes are #8 in the conference in digs per set at 13.79
Right now the Yotes are #6 in the conference in opponent aces per set at 1.46
Our next opponent, UND, is allowing a conference-worst 18.65 digs per set, and producing a conference-worst 1.00 aces per set. So I'd say we match up very well. I'll guess we sweep them in dominating fashion.
I'll take a closer look at those stats in the future....

well, its my observation that we arent playing defensive specialist quite as much as we have in the past. of course as libero Lolo is back there almost 100 % of time but alot of time shes out there with the bigs...6' or more in the back row. They do great slamming the ball, but not exactly consistant in getting digs. As an example, look at Brooklyn B role right now. She comes in and serves and go out right away. In the past shed stay out there and play half a rotation.. And look at the sophmore DS on the sidelines. They were getting alot more play time last spring. The nature of the beast is DS gets more digs and few kills. And front row players get more kills and fewer digs. (Elizabeth is kinda an exception....she gets digs and kills but her service receive is not one of her strengths). Another example of bigs spending time in the back row is Sami serving. Shes doing a pretty good job of serving actually....but tell me, how many times have you seen her serve since coming to USD before this year? Coach has obviously got a plan for not playing so many DS. And with the record shes racked up over the last 4 years or so she definitely is doing things right. But its alittle hard to complain about digs and passing if people who specialize in it arent on the court. ( i hope this isnt too garbled and makes a bit of sense) GO Yotes !!

Good stuff, I hadn’t thought about it that way.
