Considering the weather and the state track meet was in town, I thought the crowds were decent. I didn't go to the championship game, but watched on Midco. In the three SDSU games I watched I noticed one key thing: absent a few times they either don't know how to bunt or the coach doesn't like to bunt in "traditional" bunting situations. I counted at least three times in the championship game alone they, some would argue, should have bunted. Granted they got a great bunt in the 11th, but why not bunt the next guy, who lined out to center and the guy didn't tag. I could see from a previous play the center fielder had a hose, but that seems like a time to risk it. A throw 5 feet up or down the line and he's safe.
While I certainly was not openly cheering for SDSU I was not cheering against them. ORU has won plenty of enough games in a row that one of the other guys winning wouldn't have been all bad. But IMO SDSU could have won if they had played a little more small ball. Notice ORU bunted the guy to third for the eventual winning run. Bunting is the lost art of baseball.
I wasn't alone in my observations, at least 3 other people said the same thing and one was a SDSU guy and another an ex-Augie baseball player. So it wasn't just USD guys ranting against State.
They had a good year, congrats to them. Having that much success in the northern climate says a lot about the young coach. But there are plenty of could have beens if they would have played a little more small ball.
