I am a sports junky. I played and understand football more than other sports, but I truly love all collegiate athletics. Amateur athletes competing at various levels to be the best they can. If it’s a team sport, great athletes compete to win team titles and championships. If individual sports they play the best they can all on their own to win not only for themselves but the school or university as well.
But this senior class of women basketball players go way beyond that. For starters, they are extremely gifted and talented basketball players. They play as a team and perform as a team. They don’t play for themselves but rather for each other and the University of South Dakota. They play for the fans and for the Red and White. They are COYOTES 24/7.
I really hope I’m wrong saying this but I feel it will be a long time, if ever, that we will see such talented young ladies as a collective unit, in one class, come through this school again. They are champions on the floor and they are champions off the floor. They are selfless in the giving of their time and talent. All of them have what it takes to be in the USD Hall of Fame. They are in mine right now. They truly are awesome young women and I couldn’t be prouder to be an alum of this university.
I have zero clue how the season will play out. One great team leaves Sioux Falls with a loss. I’ll say it now. Whether or not we win the SLT or not, we deserve and should be in the NCAA dance as should our rivals from Brookings. But regardless how it all plays out, I personally want to thank these young ladies for all the entertainment you’ve provided since you came to Vermilion and for being excellent role models to young girls that look up to you. Your talent us off the charts, and your integrity is even higher. I wish for you nothing but the best once this crazy season is over.
You are fantastic young women. And congrats to your parents for raising such classy kids. I’ll be a fan of yours for life. Thanks for choosing to be a Coyote
